What an outboard motor used to look like:

Yes, one could buy 50 or more of the former for one of the latter, and for the OP if he really wants to go the hair shirt route a Silver Century Plus would do better on the back of his boat than an electric motor.

The Torqeedo has its place but still does not overcome the lack or range which is fine for short term use. when it is scaled up to be a half way usable auxiliary the price is 4 or 5 times an equivalent petrol outboard.

how much did it cost? and how many other boats have followed suit

Which is probably what people said when Myth of Malham appeared, when someone suggested making a boat out of GRP or when the first heavy and expensive auxiliary diesel engines appeared as a replacement for Thornycroft Handy Billies. It's simply no good sticking in a romantic past of dedicated diesel drives as a solution to yachting power problems. Research and prototypes cost money. Shock horror probe.

I have never heard of A major manufacturer designing something to prove the limitations of its design.

To say that technology will not improve is burying your head in the sand it will and what we consider impossible now is tomorrow's world.

Companies are developing green because as I say the combustion engine is dying it just isnt viable for companies to keep on producing the combustion engine forever and that will eventually include pleasure craft.
