As part of my ongoing mission to ensure my old MD11C is sound, and not going to overheat on me on my maiden voyage, it's come to the moment when I need to remove the exhaust manifold.

I can't open the coolant drains which protrude from the manifold. Tried by hand - no joy. Tried with a large pair of pliers - broke off one of the little arms.

So I've got two questions:

1. How can I drain the coolant prior to removing the manifold if the drain plugs are seized in place?

2. What spares will I need with me so I can re-assemble? Just a single gasket? Or are there other things I'll need?

Thanks!

1. Most MD11Cs are raw water cooled so 'coolant' is not the relevant word.

2. The drains can be a s*d to open, however, from memory at least one if not two are on the exhaust manifold itself so if you are planning to remove manifold anyway dont worry because that will do all the draining and then you will also have easier access to the drain vlave(s) that are not on the manifold.

3. Removing the manifold and having a good clean out of the channels etc. will prove to be the best assurance against over heating because that is invariably where any over heating poblems lie.

4. I think the exhaust manifold has 2 x gaskets (manifold to engine block) and you may need one from manifold to exhaust pipe if you have to break that one for cleaning. Look to renew the 2 x rubber hoses under the exhaust manifold because that is nearly impossible to change with the manifold in situ.

Ajob well woth doing for peace of mind.
