got my engine running again but minus `stat as the old one was stuck open. the physical dimensions seem similar to car thermostats, so is there any reason I can't use one and avoid the £64 penta rip off? How would the vehicle part fair in seawater?

Might never heat up to correct temp without one
Seem to recollect its larger than most automotive types
Runs at 60deg
Try bukh
There is another reason at the back of my mind but it's hiding from me

Only about £40 from key part

I wouldn't try to run long term without one as the engine will not get up to temperature. It also opens cooler than most car items

Salt water cooled engines must be run much cooler than indirectly cooled or fresh water cooled ones to avoid excessive corrosion due to the salt and high scaling rates due to the very high hardness of sea water

Check the manual for the correct temperature. (75C I think you will find). Dont use a car one even if it fits
