I'm about to swap gearboxes on this hunk of junk, the one fitted jams on gear after about 10mins running. does anyone know whether the box shares oil with the engine, and will it all pour out when I separate the two?
thanks

It depends on the gearbox fitted. There are two types. One has separate oil, the other common with the engine. If you download the operating manual from volvo site it tells you more. If there's not a separate oil filler, chances are that its common with the engine. I've just taken over a boat with MD1 and I'm learning as i go.

If it is a MD1 then is common oil supply (oil jet in crankshaft gearbox carrier bolt) and even if you empty the sump you are likely to get residule oil spillage
Simple way to confirm box is separate gearbox control lever

." If there's not a separate oil filler ". not relevant here

thanks folks - I drained the oil first so spillage was minimal. Odd thing is, with the new gearbox fitted, there's now a 5mm vertical misalignment between the output flange and the shaft coupling?
