The cold start device on my md1 appears to be stuck in the on position and the engine produces copious amounts of sooty/oily exhaust smoke (presumably unburnt fuel?).

Have had a poke around with a screwdriver, sprayed it with WD40 but the spring loaded button is firmly down - anyone have any idea how to release it?

I opened the access panel immediately below the device but I didn't see anything obvious and don't want to do any damage by poking around.

Many thanks.

Gavin

I think there may be a spring to return the plunger.
The same set up was used for many of the MD1-2-3 11&17 variants so even if you can't get specific detail on your engine you should get them from one of the other ws manuals

If I remember correctly the plunger pushes down the side of a quadrant at the end of which is a rack that turns the throttle rod to the injector pump and so asks for more fuel for the cold start. When the engine starts and you throttle back the quadrant should spring back and release the plunger.
Once I had the plunger go down the incorrect side of the quadrant. The engine started but died whilst I was raising the anchor (at Studland!). It was only by chance that I spotted this when I removed the plate, since I suspected a governor fault. Once I had persuaded the plunger to its proper position, the rack swung back and normal operation was resumed.
Suggest you have another look with the plate removed. IFIRC the plunger should be on the forward side of the quadrant.

Before you actually strip down the cold start I suggest you get a download of your Volvo manual from www.bluemoment.com which will give a parts explosion drawing for your version of the MD1.
I've keep one listed under 'My Favourites' so its there when I need it for my VP2010A,to either print a page or the whole manual if necessary. (Courtesy of a previous reply from VicS !)

Download and save copies of the manuals for your own engine.

Websites can go down .. or links change. They do this when you most need to access them

I had a simmilar problem with an MD11c. But my cold start would not stay down, took it all apart and found it all stuck up with very thick emulsified oil, almost like grease. Noticed a water seal had gone on the water pump and was allowing water in to the engine. Engine oil didn't show any signs of emulsion but probably would have in time. The emulsified oil was so thick it wasn,t allowing the cold start mechanism to work correctly. Might be worth you having a look, you need to take a cover off from the back of the fuel pump.
