MD22 engine won't switch off with the key .
the engine has an solenoid on the pump ,purple wire which in turn goes to the Ignition switch , can anyone say where it goes from there ?
Is there a way to test the switch ?
Any other suggestion where to look or what to do .

Purple ( violet) wire is energised by the switch to stop the engine. Just runs from switch to stop solenoid via the main wiring loom.

Check that the wire is energised by the switch , check the connections on the multipin connectors,

The earthing relay also has to be energised during the stop sequence to provide a negative return from the engine block for the solenoid to operate. This is done via a diode in the wiring loom which could have failed.

The stop solenoid itself could have failed

The earthing relay is protected by a fuse rated at 55A. If this fuse is blown, or the contacts dirty the stop solenoid could fail to operate. The fuse is normally hanging under the engine control box.

For more info, download the Volvo Penta 22 Series Instrument Panel & Engine Wiring Diagram from the VP DIY Manual, see the Downloads link on my Bavaria web site.

The negative return is operated by some solenoids in a box on the side of the engine, also used to earth the glow plugs, as Nige says there is a big fuse near the box that protects everything. The Bosch VE pump is the same base one that is used on millions of cars world wide including the Golf. However the stop solenoid works the opposite way on the marine version with power on to operate as opposed to the vehicle where it is power off to operate it. As others have said, to check it, the OP could disconnect the operating wire, manually earth the block and put positive to the solenoid to see if it will work. If it does then a check to see if the operating wire is powered up when stop is called for would be good and if it is then the earthing system would probably be at fault.

If the 55A earthing fuse (which for some reason in In one of Nigel's diagrams is called "residual current breaker") has failed the glowplugs wont work either. If the glow plugs work that has not blown.
I guess if the glowplugs are inoperative the engine will be rather reluctant to start ?

Systematic testing is called for to locate the fault. Either start , as Stu suggests, by testing the solenoid and work back towards the key switch ( which itself could be faulty) or start at the switch and work through the wiring towards the solenoid

two photo , one has a white block with two black cables one goes to earth , not sure about the other one maybe earth too , what is the white block ? . Is it some kind of fuse in side ?
Other photo , is a relay , is that the one for the solenoid by any chance ?

The white block is the earthing fuse. I'd take it off, check it and clean up the terminals before refitting and protecting the terminals with ACF50 or something similar.
One wire should be connected to the engine block, the other cos from the earthing relay.

The stop solenoid is not operated via a relay ........ see the wiring diagram in your owners manual !

ITYWF that the black relay in the second photo is the starter relay , but it may be the earthing relay. The colour coding of the wiring will tell which it is. Nigel and Stu will know

So when the battery is isolated the engine is in start mode?

Yes, and that is why you have to b careful when turning over the engine by hand, it can fire! Also to Vic, the MD22 starts that easily, that as Nige says, the glow plugs are not needed.

Next question .
Sea water pump , when can I buy one that's not going to cost an arm and leg .
Mine is too far gone ?

Which one? The early one was driven direct off the cam shaft and the later ones were drivn by a belt off the cam shaft.
