I bought it without running the engine or doing sea trial (Blocked of Ashore)
On launch the engine required throttle to start, but idled OK once warmed up, max rpm in gear at WOT indicated 2400 - 2500 (however I recently found out the tacho is not reliable so this was probably nearer 2800 - 3000rpm at WOT) it still had sluggish acceleration and stalled occasionally
The engine sounds OK to me, but I've not had much experience with boat engines. Its not 'easy' to turn over by hand, which is why we haven't done a test yet, but I do intent to do a compression check to confirm OK.
On my engine the fuel amount adjustment screw was loose, underneath the cover. Had to loosen the timing cover to get it loose, if you are not a mechanic
dso NOT try yourself since the workshop manual won't cover this operation completely. You WILL loose the star spring. However my engine acted just as you described yours. Im an experienced mechanic but this was HELL to find. Good luck!
Hi,
ha it's 2015.. just reading this. I think an air leak into the fuel system before the injector pump. is the best pick of all the suggestions and as one member suggested pull it out and put it under pressure either immersed or with soapy water to dectect bubbles... the trouble with this method though is.. if it's a leak at a union it will be hard to detect when the union is where one has sealed the line for pressure test.
I have this same problem and although I have tried to sweat solder on a slightly corroded pipe from the filter to the top of the injector pump, I suspect it's still sucking air.. The reason is.. that 'THE NEXT DAY' or so there is a bit of moist diesel where the line becomes horizontal at a support bracket under the injector pump... But this is also on my stb engine which is idling and has full power.. But that's my best bet.. both my engines have less than fifty hours after reco. tamd40b.
If this was solved by Natterjack I'd like to hear about it. Cheers
Anyone recall the thread that talked about a cam in the throttle linkage when engaging forward or reverse in this forum? I think it talked increasing the RPM.
