Just noted that there are two new threads on this engine. Thought I was one of the last still running one! I swear every year that I will replace my 1977 23hp but it goes on reporting for duty each season. Really love the power from that big flywheel but I am guessing something will go soon. So my question is what is the likelihood of getting spare parts? Keypart seem to have less stock available each year that passes so any tips on where to get reasonably priced bits.

Mine still going strong..... Looks for large piece of wood to touch..........Replaced both cylinder liners and pistons 2 years ago due to a corrosion hole appearing and sucking salt water into the sump. Total cost of spares from Volvo Penta @ Tollesbury less than £900. See WOA forum for reports and pictures

New alternator and Tacho courtesy of local Auto electric supplier.
Annual oil changes and winterisation I reckon it will see me out
It will probably rot away from the inside so I will never know till that day occurs.

I have a starter for a MD11C. It packed up and I had it rebuilt with new windings as a new one was £800. Cost £130 trade to rebuild. This was approx 6 years ago but had very light use as changed engine 4 years ago. PM me if interested

I keep toying with the idea of a closed loop cooling system to prevent further corrosion of my MD11C's insides but not sure if it's worth the effort as after 35 years it's probably well corroded already. Still, something very reassuring about the noise it makes and never seems short of power.:encouragement:

I have replaced mine very satisfactorily as a suitable new engine became available at a very very acceptable price.

However, after some Googling, I had found a boatyard in Holland who specialised in replacement MDII engines. They operated by; you taking your boat into their yard where they would do a swift replacement taking your old engine in part-exchange (for subsequent re-furbishing), all done within a week. So you had a bit of a cruise plus a weeks holiday in Holland plus getting a re-furbed engine all at price considerably better than any of the available options in UK.

No doubt they would trade an old MDII delivered to them by car for a re-furb engine, if so this might be achieved in a day trip. You of course would be doing your own removal & installation work.

I do not have their contact details I am afraid, but there were a number of very positive testimonials from Brit boatowners, on their website.

My MD11c is still going strong ish!

I've just replaced the exhaust elbow as the old one had so much corrosion it just fell apart. I found the new one on eBay from the states. Worked out a lot cheaper than Keypart, and the flanges and gasket came in the price.

The engine seems to run fine at 1100rpm, if I run it any higher it doesn't like it and starts to overheat.

Remove the exhaust manifold and put in a bucket with Domestos Lime Zero (£2); within an hour it would be descaled; also, pour some domestos descaler into the cylinder head waterways. Your engine will stop overheating; that's what I did last week.
