Volvo leg lift ram rebuild DP-E

Yes, done it. Be VERY careful when disassembling the piston, there are 6 small springs and balls that act as overpressure valves, easy to lose one. NB ensure the retaining nut for the piston is tightly secured (+loctite), it can come unscrewed in situ leading to the piston 'floating'.
The key thing is to make a removal tool for the end caps (ground steel profile with4x pins) the caps take a fair bit of torque to start unscrewing. Make sure that the scraper seal has stainless spring.

Parts available from Pirtek or other good hydraulic suppliers

I did all four of mine a couple of years ago following a guide in the online mobo mag. So far, so good. No leaks since. Can't remember which issue it was in but you can search and download from their website.

Getting the end caps off is the issue.
I imported a cap tool from the USA fits on a 1/2 inch socket driver.
Have been feeding the screw in cap with freeing oil for a few weeks now. Shall have a go with the tool in the near future.
It’s only a very minor drip, boat on the trailer so i have time to contemplate.
If no go, then indeed its engine out, possibly according to some.
I’d be happier to cut some holes in the transom to get to the other end ..... hopefully it wont get to any of that.

Heat really helps if the caps are stuck, I dont think there is any other way if they don't come loose on the first try which btw some do and quite easily.
The caps are soft aluminium so if you apply to much force and the tool slips and the edges gets soft you may not get a second chance.
I would advice you use heat before the first try to be on the safe side of removing the engines.

I have not measured or read the spec of the glue that is used but having done 4 rams twice my gut says 50-60 degrees C should be enough.

Tnx for the heat tip, will get the heat gun out for this.

Why did you have to do the rams again, seal probs ?

First time I only did the seals but got a new seal leak and since I had to open them again I decided to change all non metallic parts thinking they would be good for another 8-10 yrs.

Use Loctite 542 or similar when you put then caps back.
