I stupidly managed to lose this when changing the supercharger oil today... any idea where i'd get a new one? Considering I live in Ireland and there's no volvo penta agents... would I be better off just measuring the diameter of the screw and going to a local hardware shop to get one?

I'll check with local shops first - a dealer prob wouldn't sell me just a copper washer because i'd be paying by credit card. It would cost them more to use the terminal than the washer costs.

A run of the mill copper washer will be fine. The VP part no. is 907132 and retails for around 50p. If you use your VP dealer often he should supply you one for free as a good will gesture.
If you don't have any luck, PM me your address and I will send you one free of charge, just make a small donation to the RNLI

I love this forum /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Scottie - many thanks for that tip
Ady - Very nice offer... does it help that I gave 20euro to the RNLI last Wednesday to buy a ticket to a ball eventhough I knew I wouldn't be there due to college? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As it turns out, I need to order a few small parts so now that I have the part number I think i'll just order one with the other parts

Thanks again folks

So how did you lose the washer? Is there a story??

Joking apart be careful on filling the oil as in don't overfill, the dipstick is measured in the fully tightened position to read the oil.

Steve

peanuts - I carefully put the dipstick, washer and drain plug on a tissue (as to not dirty the boat). Then I put the drain plug back in and had dirty hands, I put the dipstick aside (after cleaning it) and began to wipe my hands with the tissue and then threw it out onto the pontoon - then remembered about the washer d'oh!

Don't you mean that the oil is measures in the fully UNTIGHTENED position? as in, you just dunk the dipstick in without tightening?

As it turns out, I need to order some parts so i've sent emails to various people asking for quotes, just waiting for them to get back to me. ATM my shopping list on marinepartseurope.com is 125euro so if the UK guys can beat that i'll go with them

From the owners manual:

"Unscrew (counter clockwise) and remove the dipstick. Wipe off oil. Reinstall oil dipstick do not screw it down. Remove oil dipstick again and check that the oil level is between the MIN and MAX"

Conflicting info there lads - who's right??

Workshop manual is not very clear, but my KAD 42 Owners Manual is quite clear. it says...."NOTE: Screw the dipstick in when checking the oil level"

So your owners manual says one thing and mine says the opposite ..... wonder which is right.

Volvo must like to keep us on our toes.

Mind you we have different engines maybe the compressors are different.

Nothing is simple anymore!

Eddie

That's crazy, this needs to be investigated further methinks. I seriously doubt the superchargers are different eventhough we've got different engines

I just knew this was going to happen. OK This is the story, as the Owners manual states 'do not screw it down', however when I did my first oil change that was what I did on both of my compressors and realised I used all of the 250ml oil supplied by VP, so further investigations and talking to VP informed me that you do in fact screw the dip stick fully in to read the level. So I drained out all the oil, refilled and checked the level with the dipstick screwed in, then drained the oil out of one of the compressors into a measured jug and guess what - exactly 100ml.
The VP Workshop Manual makes no reference to screwing in the dipstick to read the oil level.
I hope that clears up the question being asked.
I do like a good story - now back to work!

Steve

OK, so when you screw it down, using 100ml will have it at it's MAX?

Looks like I have just the right amount in my supercharger now, as when I DIDN'T screw the dipstick down, the reading was halfway between MIN and MAX. So screwing it down now fully will put it right at MAX

With the dipstick just resting on the top of the compressor (not screwed in) the level is at about the 1/4 way from the bottom of the dipstick level mark (the flattened area), when the dipstick is then screwed in the level moves upto the full mark on the dipstick.
Hope this is of some help.

Steve

Some earlier manuals are wrong wrong (as my 4-yr old would say).
Dipstick should be screwed IN to measure the level.
Else you will have too much oil in there.

Not too sure why you're changing it in the first place. Did it get contaminated?

Just following the service schedule. I change my oils every 100hours or every season, whichever comes first - Call it overkill but tis my own choice

My manual says "check" the supercharger oil, not "change".

It shouldn't get too hot, not much risk of water or combustion products in there, but if it keeps you happy ... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Dave
I can understand you asking this as the VP Instruction Manual states every 100 hours check the oil level but for the 200 hour it just states "Turbo - check" with no other explanation. However, the reason for changing the oil is that in the VP Workshop Manual, for the supercharger it quotes "Oil changes should be made every 2 hundred hours"
It is also here that the statement about ensuring the correct level is maintained and the reasons why.
I hope this is of some help.
