I've just been talking to a chum of mine, apparently having trouble finding liners and pistons for a KAD motor, I'm not sure what model they are, about 230hp I think and maybe from 2003 ish. He thinks production of the parts has ceased at Volvo, but there would be an aftermarket source? No?

Is there really parts availability issues on a motor so young?

I can get liners and pistons for my 40 year old Perkins so it woudl seem odd to me for an issue such as this.

This doesn't sound very right, as I know a chap who's recently melted part of his a KAD 42, (230hp) and has had a new set of pistons & liners fitted (by a Volvo Agent.)

Can't help on availability but would suggest that you price the engine rebuild kit that includes liners, pistons std size bearings and gaskets the kit used to sell about the same price as the liner sets on their own.

I recently had to wait a lead time for volvo to put together kits, the kad 42 had different comp ratio and different liner where the flMe ring area is for some reason, it was then changed when the 43 came out. Also the earlier motors had the head gasket changed.

Ah ok, thanks all.

I'm surprised on such an engine there is no aftermarket source, maybe all the marine bits are different to the lorry stuff (I'm assuming this is also a vehicle block).

I have in the past on an economy rebuild fitted k s ( kolben Schmidt ) liners , ring sets from Volvo as the liners are not available as a separate item through Volvo. Engines have to have been in production 10 years before Volvo allow there suppliers like k s to sell aftermarket.

Full kits are really the answer.

Thanks - I didn't know its a marine only motor, very surprised.

I guess Volvo have got it sewn up with the builders and they make more £££ supplying bits.

I note for a Cummins B series a complete kit is less than a bag of sand.
