Hello have a kad 44 producing black smoke. Checked charge air to injectors all ok. swapped edc and most other parts with my other engine except sensors. Suspect faulty coolant sensor/ charge air temp sensor or wiring loom. Dose anyone know where the EDC Sensor, coolant water*1624368 is on the engine

Page 61 of the Operator's Manual shows you the position.

Not sure if I am looking at the correct manual but but what I am seeing is it is down by the engine mount that is under the compressor?

When the sensors fail you won’t get fuel so no black smoke .
I’d suggest you have either a turbo problem or supercharger problem and it sounds like lack of air and boost pressure .
Check the flap in the y valve just after the air filter as it can get stuck not allowing air into the engine .

Hi Volvopaul

I checked charge air pressure from 'T' connection with a simple hose and analogue gauge not very accurate but there was no difference with stbd engine. May need to rig something up which is more accurate, boat is out of the water it will have to wait till next season.

Swapped Y valve no improvement

i had this happen last year as well, thinking it was the injectors as engines have 1300hrs i removed and got them tested, all failed same O/H by bosch.

Fitted injectors back and problem went away until a couple of months ago when i did a service oil/ filters etc. on sea trial noticed it smoking again. left it for the season as it only smokes bad pretty much in compressor range which im not in very often. Although it has started to get worse while trolling just 1000- 1100rpm
Just removed injectors thinking i may have contaminated the fuel system and damaged an injector when i did the service or there was a poor job done with O/H of injectors . Just got results back from Bosh, they all tested fine.

Cant see it being the T/C as problem fixed itself after i did the injectors the first time. everything dose point to the compressor but belts are all ok clutch seems ok no massive gap between clutch plates 0.4mm. charge air seems ok again need to test this again.
My thinking behind the senors/harness is, by moving and pulling it resolved the problem temporally, maybe overthinking it!

when you go from 3000rpm back to neutral quickly engine starts to jug once or twice then settles down to idle normal, I changed the priming pump for a new one no difference.

I did call a volvo tech to plug in his computer to see what readings we had but he said its not possible to connect a computer! 300 euro later and non the wiser.

i noticed another thing maybe unrelated but when i put port engine ( smoky one) into neutral and push throttle fwd quickly compressor kicks in and wont disengage when i do the same to stbd engine compressor will kick in for a second and then disengage, i swapped over the compressor controller in the black boxes with no effect.
Checked charge air hose to sensor no water and was clear.

There is no active alarms on diagnostic when i press it. Flashes normal.
I did disconnect charge air temp senors on both engines and ran. didnt notice anything different and no active alarm on self diagnostic, maybe this is normal. im not clued up on the electronics, would be much appreciated if you could give me a little insight.

Did you manage to fix this issue? If so,. what was the diagnosis?
