Just approaching a 200 hr service and getting prepared to do the tappets on my kad 300. Last time I did this we had problems getting a good seal using the VP sealant provided to remake the gasket. VP apparently will no longer sell the gasket so you have to use a bed of sealant. Does anyone know if it is possible to get old of one of these gaskets? Does anyone sell them other than VP?

Its bad enough that I have to dwell in a very cramped position while I do the work, dont want to have to do it a 2nd time because the cover wont seal properly!

Having done this many times I can recommend that you thoroughly clean and degrease the rocker cover and mating face, then using RTV or Volvos own black engine sealant silicone apply a good bead to the rocker cover and leave it on its back for at least 30 mins to semi harden, then apply a fresh bead to the mating surface and then carefully insert the cover rear first near the turbo and work it past the compressor airtube and then tighten it down.
If you do it while the silicone is wet I guarantee you will scrape most of it off before its in place, also build the bead on the cover high enough so its above the small feet you will see at intervals around the edge as this is what the cover tightens down onto, they were so you didn't over squeeze the gasket when it was available, so now you are making your own gasket its important its not thinner than the distance from the bottom of the groove to the top of the feet or it won't seal.
Pay close attention to the area across the back of the cylinder head as this is where most leaks occur due to the angle of the motor in the boat.
