Volvo identification letters/numbers

The letters Volvo uses for identification are puzzling.When I look up my engines KAMD42A I also get KAD42A + others.What do these letters/numbers.stand for ?

I believe it is Kompressor After-cooled Marine Diesel
KAMD is a shaftdrive version
The KAD version is the same engine, but on a sterndrive

Think you will find that the KAD42A is the stern drive version (no gearbox) and the KAMD42A is the inboard one with gearbox...

Same base engine I believe....
