Volvo HS1 gearbox

Any thoughts on a volvo HS1 hydraulic box which is very noisy when at tick over ahead or astern. Totally quiet in neutral at any revs. Goes quiet when putting on more revs 900+ when in gear. Engine is Volvo 200 diesel of around 1996 vintage.
Current owner says it has been always like that.... Any ideas or similar experiences gratefully received...

The 200 hp VP had a reputation for being hard on gearboxes.
Another YBW contributor "hlb" eventually changed his to something else, in a Princess 35.

Having said that it can sometimes just be the drive plate chattering which is:
a) not terminal, just annoying
b) not normally particularly expensive, depending on accessability.

I had Mercruiser 180hp + Hurth g'boxes in a Broom 33 and replaced the drive plate to no avail. Eventually sent G'box to Hurth who said this engine/ box is a bad match. Would chatter for some time, but I think they said it was various bearings and things wearing. Would eventually need replacing.
