Volvo EVC 2.5inch Display

Lots of expertise on this forum! Question for you all. I have a single engine gas I/o with EVC-E2. Boat came with 2.5” display and the tach with display and a few other gauges. My question is how do I control/change what the tach display shows without an EVC control panel (with the knob)? Can that be done from the 2.5” display? If so I cannot figure it out.
Display currently set to show engine hours (top) and then fuel economy on bottom but that’s blank since I don’t have the trip computer software upgrade which I am told costs 2000 EUR!! That to unlock capabilities of hardware I already own….
If there is a way to unlock those features for less, that would great too.IMG_2763.jpeg

If you want to give it a try with the multi-display, I have mine listed for sale on ebay for half what I paid!

If you’ve got EVC-D or E then the tacho will only show engine hours, and no, there is no way of changing that. I’ve genuinely never seen one to even have space for trip computer data and so didn’t know this was possible. Is it the 110mm gauge? If so that may explain it as the more common one (that I am used to) is the 85mm version.

2000 euros sounds super expensive for the Trip Computer software though? Unless you are talking for a twin engine in which case it’s creeping up to that as you’d need the upgrade done to both engines

Thanks but I already have one. I have not been able to figure out if/how to use it to change the display not the Tach. I wonder if the 2.5" is a "listen-only" device on the network or if it can actually be used to change settings on anything other than the display itself.

Yes according to the serial number VP reports its a EVC-E2 and the engine is a Gen V. Not sure of the size of the tach. probably the 110mm as its about 4" diameter. It's strange to me since the OLDER versions of EVC allow you to change it from the EVC control knob. The Trip Computer is an option on the engine so where would that be displayed? just on the 2.5" or would require an other display?? Why would VolvoP program/design the EVC-D and -E versions in this way when the capability if clearly there?

Do you know the engine serial number?

yes its A443669
Yep, as you’ve already established that’s EVC-E. And the owners manual showing against that engine specifically states ‘the tacho will only display engine hours’ so your display is a new one on me!

Trip Comp data would normally be viewed via the 2.5” display, as that is the mandatory component, the tacho is optional for EVC-D onwards.

The scrolling of engine data you’re suggested in earlier generations is now only via the displays rather than the tacho LCD as it is a much smaller ‘screen’ and hence they’ve tried to reduce the available data to just engine hours. Or that and trip data on the larger tachos it would seem

Understood thank you very much for the help. Not sure why VO would “waste” the real estate if the capability is there.

I am installing a garmin with a j1939 port that I hope will give me access to all the data on that screen.

What should activating the trip computer cost?

Is the Garmin screen the Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit version? I think it would need to come from Volvo rather than Garmin to qualify, as I think I read/heard that Garmin can’t sell their Glass Cockpit version (ie the one that works with the Volvo system) despite being the ones who make it!

As for Trip Computer data I can’t say exactly as the VP system appears to be down at the moment but it’s around £450 plus VAT I think? And then embarrassingly about 30 seconds onboard to load it!

Ouch… but less that I thought. They ever have a Black Friday sale?? 😂

It regular garmin. Not glass cockpit. I did something similar on our other boat with a Raymarine MFD.

The system is back up and running and Trip Computer software is £492 plus VAT in the UK. They (VPUK) did actually have a sales campaign last year where they were offering a discounted price but it doesn't sound like that is going to be done again this year sadly

Thanks. I was just quoted 590 EUR for EACH of 1) Trip Computer, 2) Power Trim Adj, 3) Cruise Control and 4) Tow Mode. 3,000 EUR total… for software to unlock “nice to have” features/capabilities in the hardware we already own. Do you recall how big the discounts were in the 2024 campaign?

Ah OK, so yes in that case the price would be about right if you were getting them all individually...

However, Volvo do also have the 'full control package' which features all of those for the bargain price of £1,103 plus VAT, so cheaper than doing them all separately.

The campaign was offering 20% off of a single engine software upgrades
