thats exactly what could be expected,

The Karnic factory Table say's 32kn max for the D3-160,
but that's an estimation, and with brand new hull, without any fouling,

it's good that you have been able to do a sea trial,
I hope without any issues,

and when the dust settled..........

We decided to not buy any of the previous 2 boats, partly because both sellers took ages to respond or come back with a reasonable offer (they must not want to sell boats in the south of france ?) and I am still waiting on a reply from the "professional / commercial" seller after 2 (!) months

And you know how things go , while waiting for responses from the 2 boats I "stumbled" across a 3rd candidate , this one had a D3-160 engine and after a few e-mail exchanges (the German seller responded that same day .. sometimes within a few hours !! *gasps* ) we drove up to Hamburg where we viewed a virtually unused (80hrs) Karnic 2460 , with a blue hull and a hardtop

Beautifully maintained , dutifully serviced every spring and winter, every piece of paper that came with the boat still in possession , and loaded with "goodies" ie Brand new 2009 3.5T aluminium harbeck trailer with flush system for bearings etc , Raymarine C120 (12") plotter / fishfinder, Raymarine 240E modular VHF, Raymarine ST70 smartpilot X10 (autopilot), Volvo Penta QL auto trim & balance system , EVC & smart trim , "upgraded" black box for a few extra HP's , winter cover , summer cockpit cover and enclosures for the hardtop , Electric windlass Stainless anchor + stainless chain etc etc etc

After careful consideration we bought this boat :) , pictures will follow when the boat arrives but the comming winter months it will stay dry in its current spot in Hamburg, to be collected in March

anyhow , I would like to thank everyone for their input ..

yes, very beautifull, exactly what you need !
as I saw the advertised price on the web, I believe you did a very good deal, especially with so many popular extra's.

what deal do you have on the maintenance ?
do you know if they have done a readout of the engine computer ?
there you could see eventual or occasional error warnings,
(we did this recently on my two D3's, and discovered a small issue, but still under warranty)
if still possible, asc them to do this while you are there.

must be frustrating, having bought such a nice new toy, and not be able to have it nearby for several months ?

look forward to see her during one of our Croatian island hopping trip's ;)

good luck with her
Bart

KAD32's every time. Just ask yourself why Volvo have brought out a totally new d3 series so soon after the originals. I have a friend with D3's 190's and has had nothing but problems since he got them new just over 3 years ago.

Variations on the kads have been around for 20 years yet the d3's lasted barely 4 years before they completely redesigned.

The D3 series are based on the Volvo 5 cylinder car engine that met the Euro 3 / Euro4 road vehicle emissions requirements. The "new" D3 is based on the updated 5 cylinder Volvo diesel car engine meeting the Euro 5 requirements (also meaning the emissions for the marine versions will be reduced compared to the old D3). The head is apparently new, plus of course a lot of other modifications to mapping etc. The basic bottom end is very likely the same as the old one. Volvo Penta probably had to change to the new version, as the old one would no longer be produced by Volvo ( Ford) in large volumes.

The "new" D3 is an evolution of the "old" D3, much as the earlier KAD diesel engines evolved.

Hi

I have a Karnic 2460 that is fitted with a 250hp Steyr diesel, another tight squeeze in the engine bay but part of the floor to the front of the engine bay does come away to give a little more access.

One thing to be wary of with the 2460 and I guess the 2660 is water ingress at the hatch pivot point to the rear of the engine bay. This probably caused the rust spots on the KAD.
Newer boats were fitted with an adaptation on the exterior of the hatch to try and alleviate this problem. On my installation water dripped onto the air intake and turbo causing us problems.

Enjoy your boat but do be aware of the water problem

D3 - KAD32

When was the d3 updated as i have looked at a 2006 Regal 2565 with a d3 and now i am not sure whether to make an offer on it due to all your comments.
A Regal 2465 i looked at had a KAD32 but it looked very tight in the bay.

The new D3 is sceduled to be available from January 2010,
info I got from Volvo at SIBS,
so for sure there is none in a boat from 2006.
But
I can say that I am a happy VP D3 owner
perhaps one the few :)

Hi Martin
Is your boat name "AWOL" ? I think I may have seen it

I have seen the water problem point at the engine bay hatch pivot point of the 2460, and have seen several solutions applied as well. The boat I bought does not have any of these solutions applied but I made a mental note do make sure to fix it before leaving it in the water for prolonged periods of time.
The 2660 has a different designed engine hatch so BartW should be OK

KAD32 against D3

Just remember the KAD32 can cruise with 3700revs or 88% of full load!
The D3 require -10% on speed that is 76% of rated load!

That means that a 170hp Kad can pull out 150hp continuous
The D3 190 can produse 145hp continuous! So you have to compare Kad32 with D3 190!
