I'm considering buying a boat with a Volvo MD22L engine - I seem to remember that some Volvo's are considered no-go areas - is this model one such? Any comments / views?
hi, I have a md22l built 95 my boat was a charterboat for 7 years so the engine has run quiet a lot I presume. In the 4 years I have the boat I never had a problem with the engine.Always starts wel. No smoking,
The only cost I had was for servicing the dieselpump since there was a small leak on the bosch dieselpump. My engine was made by perkins in England. I heard that volvo's made by perkins are better but perhaps this is a dockyard legend.
October PBO has a question regarding MD22 (not MD22L) and response from the PBO "expert" (from memory) indicates that the Perkins built volvos are fine, good even! I have a Perkins Prima 50 which went on to form the basis for the MD22L which (and I just know I'm going to regret saying this) has been virtually trouble free over 2800hrs running. The engine is now 16 years old and the only replacement part other than routine servicing (filters/belts/oil/coolant etc) have been a new lift pump and a new alternator. It's not the quietest engine around, but starts instantly and pushes our 8 ton+ boat around at an average of 0.56 gph.
If there is a weakeness, the wiring loom is overcomplicated for what it does - bits and pieces all over the place.
I have the Volvo Penta MD22 (57hp).
We have the boat for 2 years now and the engine has done 820 hours.
No problems at all (knock on wood).
Excellent starting, very low fuel consumption, a bit noisy but it has never missed a beat.
The engine has a plate saying "built by Perkins".
AFAIK the only difference with the Perkins Prima (which it is) are the electrics and the green colour.
Be aware to change the timing belt in time to avoid damage if it breaks.
I have had nothing but trouble from Volvo bit but they were all new!! Thats on 2 new Dufour boats and my cousin rejected his Bav until they put a new Volvo in - oil pump failure at 1 hr!!
Its Volvo's don't want to know attitude to proplems on new or nearly new bits that sucks.
Volvo bits are a rip off but so are most other makes.
I would not buy any new boat with a volvo bit on but if buying secondhand and expect no warantee I would consider it if I received good replies as you have.
Friend has just had three water pump failures in a row on a 2002 installed in his Westerly Sealord - what adds to the fun is that his boat is in Chile!
We have had a Volvo MD22L in our boat from new 10 years ago. Never had a problem with it. We spend long periods in remote anchorages so it gets alot of charging use.
One thing I have found comforting is that there were alot of these engines fitted to production boats in the 1990's yet if one does a google looking for questions seeking to solve problems with these engines the search is pretty much barren.
Ours does use small quantities of oil at times (other forumites have reported the same) and under heavy loads (abuse?) quite alot - we once went through a litre driving hard directly into steep, very short 3 m seas with lots of heavy pitching and 30+ knot winds in 6 hours of motoring (for those inclined to moan that it should have bin sailed, we had to get to a prearranged appointment).
They have some good points - for example, the fuel lift pump is very good and after filter changes, etc they don't need priming (even so with us with fuel tank in the fin keel), while fitted with heaters they start no problem without (although only gets down to 10C or so here), and their electrics are isolated from the engine block, alternator chassis, etc (well the ones I have come across are).
Does anybody know where I can find detailed drawings of the MD2020 ? I am trying to find details of parts - the standard volvo service manual is too vague and volvo only supply the detailed drawings to volvo distributors
