Hi,

I've seen posts about this before but I had no need to read them at the time!

My Volvo engine hour meter (the type that sits behind the rev counter) has become intermittant. I assume the price of a replacement from Volvo will be insane. Has anyone stripped one down to fix it? Are they used in non-marine applications?

Rob.

Hope this doesn't sound daft to you!

You need to remove your tacho. Easy to do by pulling panel out so you can get to rear of tacho and at that point its pretty straight forward how to remove tacho.

Take the tacho home and place it in your airing cupboard for 3-4 days.

Why?

Well what it sounds like, if I read your post correct, the tacho is functioning ie still indicating the rpm at which the engine is running. The problem is the hour meter, the LCD display, is not indicating the hours the engine has run…

Chances are you will find the tacho its self has recorded the hours the engine has run, but by virtue of the LCD display suffering the effects of damp, wont visibly display the hours recorded.

Like you say, you aren’t the first to have this problem!

Try this as it wont cost you a bean, if though you choose to replace the tacho at a later date, drop me a PM.

Regs.

I Just note my hours on warm dry days and estimate for the rest of the time. Volvo hour displays do not like damp, shame isn't it when you consider the environment they operate in.

If not, try a Radio Spares (RS) hourmeter, stock number 331-146 operates from 12v-48v DC feed. About a tenner.
