Volvo DPH steering issues

We have a 2017 Sargo 36 with twin V/P D6 and DPH drives. For two years the Port Steering will report an intermittent failure when cruising. Turn off the engine and ignition and wait 30 sec, the message goes away and everything works normally. Recently we had both sides with that message and the engines went into "limp" mode. Error codes Port engine yesterday. MID 250, PSID 9, FMI 8 , OCC ---, Anyone had this and could give me direction on repair. Boat is in Newport Oregon with a mechanic that seems to know what he is doing but not a full on Volvo Dealer.

Hi I don't know the answer but since I have a Sargo 31 I was interested. Mine has a DPI not a DPH. I looked in the EVC 2.0 W'shop manual to see if the fault codes or similar showed up. I don't have much to offer but the nearest I could find was some VP Interceptor code. (Interceptors are the VP version of trim tabs I think.) I don't have them but perhaps you do? Could they be related to the problem? The codes under checking the servo motor function were similar and not common in the manual. Sorry not to be more helpful.

It is a shame that VP don't like customers and try to be more helpful. I only have the manuals because I can read, which puts me ahead of the local dealer. They could be kind enough to have codes and explanations....but they don't.

You probably need to replace the drive position sensor.
I had exactly the same pb. All solved after sensor replacement.

The relevant manual will depend on the EVC generation. The post above saying that the code in question didn’t appear in the EVC-2 manual is a perfect example, as those codes are a vastly different format to the earlier EVC generations.

As for the sensor replacement, these are the sleeves that are surrounding the steering rams on the outside. They can be removed by disconnecting the steering ram pins & sliding the sleeves off, after which you can pull the electrical cable down through the transom shield, ideally attaching a piece of cord or similar to use to install the new sleeve cable!

Reverse the procedure for the new ram sleeve/steering sensor (they are handed so make sure you get the correct one for the side at fault), auto-configure & fire it up and things should work themselves out automatically (ie the drive should return to its straight position on startup)

Thank you for the reply. Its a twin D3 220 setup with DPS-A aquamatics. I have steering failure fault and code mid 250 psid 9. The steering arm is internal and i can see the sensors. From the research i have done the sensors are parts of the steering ram and cant be obtained separately unfortunately.

My apologies-the original post was about a D6 with steering issues and so the system & procedure described was for that

I must confess I’ve never had to do the same on a D3 version so would need to look that up!
