Hello,

My Volvo d9s have 3 expensive lube filters and 30mlitres of oil. A Cummins QSC of similar horsepower makes do with 19 litres of oil and one inepensive oil filter, yet is reputed to be more reliable than the D9, which also requires a number of not inexpensive breather filters that the Cummins does not seem to need.

A friend of mine with D6’s is starting to work on a two yearly service program, instead of an annual one.

Does anybody know of a scource of less expensive, but good quality filters, that can be sent to France, please ? I think a lot of people would be interested.

Been using these for 17 yrs with Volvo + MAN .No known issues .

INLINE FILTERS, UK's leading Filter Specialists

Change the oil every year , more so if you do a lot of low speed running .The additive package functionality is time related not hrs or miles or what ever .Additionally in cold winters doing nothing = increased water condensation in the oil .

You can buy the correct Volvo spec oil from loads of on line oil retailers.

On the create 60 L of MAN spec 3275 “ Italian petroleum 15W40 diesel oil .I got the yard to drop it off on the boat .
€360 , €120 per canister .Sure mr Google + del hassle + lugging+ any spurious cross border taxes - said €100 per 20 L …..but I had it and £60 quids worth of fuel + oil filters and it took 1/2 a day to “ service “ them .Small beer compared to filling it up with fuel .

It’s not worth skimping on the oil .

The breather filters are cheap on line just find the equivalent. Same with air filters. The Volvo filters are half price from a truck dealer

is that an anti drag crinkle costing you’ve had applied? Like the surface of a golf ball?

Yep you have got it J .
Yes no loss of speed apparently .Common wisdom has historically suggested a smooth surface , you see it in nature on the surface of fast fish and faster sharks too a indented slightly rough scaly skin .Barracudas have roughy to touch skin .
Water or in the case of a golf ball air delaminates and reduces drag .
Golf ball is copied nature .

Yard applied on top of on top of etc .What ever AF it is as AF it works .To be fair not a big fouling area compared to CdA .

I know there s a whole sub industry of AF removal being mindful of the gel coat , then repairing said GC .

Boat cruisers easily @30 knots within 80;% load - actually 77 % to be accurate so where is the incentive to have it stripped ?
The rougher bit gets the less effort , the “ load “ is needed .

Each to there own but a stippled surface works for me .

Stippled, eh? My old dad would have called it an orange peel finish. Generally followed by “strip it back and start again.”

In fairness, with a/f it’ll do the job and no-one will see it once relaunched. Mebbe functional but not as beautiful as such a fine craft deserves.

You can’t cheat 1000s or is it (ask Attenborough );or is it millions if yrs of fast fish surface finish ?

The nay say do ers claim it won’t reach it Then why not use a smooth golf ball ?
Also settle a row on another thread re rated rpm and wot .Another forum mystery it seems .

Dimpled golf balls have a pattern to optimise their aerodynamics. Least that’s what the manufacturers keep on saying to persuade me to buy their premium brands. Sometimes I think they disappear into the unassailable rough just about as quickly as the budget ones. But I guess it’s my golf game that really should be focused on.

I’m sure you don’t need an excuse to get out on the water and open up the taps. But I hope you have a lovely day for it and will look forward to the pix.

That blue hull looks very oxidised. Once you've sanded the hull smooth for antifoul she would benefit from a good polish. You could start another restoration thread like a few of the guys have done on here..... ;):giggle:
We were due a paint job then covid struck .
Work in progress before next season now .In the interim did not want to get any additional wax on it .

Paint! Surely you’ll be banned from the Itama illuminati.

That hull was hand laid between 1am and 5am when the moon was half full and the wind was between 4 and 5 knots from the east by 4th generation boat builders from one small village in the Italian hills. They will be very upset!

All Ferretti group boats are painted bar none nowadays .
They do it because they told me they can’t be sure with injection / vac bagging etc and with clear they can sign off a moulding moulding from a quality pov .
Obviously opens up a multitude of finishes for the punters as well .But that’s not there main reason .

Paints come a long way as you know .Particularly the last 5 or so years .Never needs polishing just washing .
In 2002 sure I get the hesitation no way .Fast fwd to 2015 upwards it’s ok .I have seen a few examples etc .
We are currently working next spring , but that dates fluid .So no thread as such .
As said in the interim no point waxing the thing and certainly letting guys loose with sanding apparatus .

Sorry for the thread drift OP.

Thanks. Not much to dislike about any of that except mebbe the fuel burn. But we don’t talk about stuff like that. :)
