Looking for a replacement boat and having read some reports that Volvo D9s sometimes but rarely break cylinder liners, I was rather surprised when the first yacht with D9s that I inspected, a very well kept Prestige 50, had just had an engine rebuild at 400 hours for just that reason. It was not done by Volvo (they quoted 80,000 Euros) and probably not reported.
Considering that both engines had exactly the same life until the event, and wondering whether this is more frequent than reported, I walked away. Does anybody really know how often this happens and why?
