The operator manual says you should remove the rubber hose and check the exhaust for corrosion every year. What they don't say is you need to take the riser off the turbo to do so. On the upside the corrosion isn't bad but I can't turn the turbo by hand. I presume it should turn easily with finger pressure?
It is about an hour to the yard where she is ashore, went fine on the way down in November although we had to drop to about 22kn due to weather, if the turbo was stuck I think we would have noticed. What would cause it to stick lying ashore? Will I need to take it off and strip it to free it?

It should spin freely with just finger pressure.

They do sometimes seize up after being sat for a while ,but usually just getting them moving by hand is all it takes to free them up.

Mine (on a d4) got stuck, we just freed it up by hand, And it was fine

Checking by taking the hose off every year is excessive. If it’s not rotating you will certainly notice a loss of performance after a couple of thousand rpms. So if it’s working leave it.
They do get stuck due to rust build up on the outlet side.
Most of the time a quick spin from the inlet side will do it. As julians says it should spin freely with no sign of catching.
Mine (KAD43) was a bit more solid after a 2 year lock down non-use and I had to take off the outlet side and loosen very carefully with a ring spanner on the rotor then a good scrap out. I found one of those small electrical screwdrivers good for that.

Thanks.
Sprayed WD40 in before I left yesterday, will have a go with a bit more hand force next time. Not the easiest to see in. Not sure how to get to the inlet side, looks like a fair bit to come off to even see it!
The rubber hose needs to come off to check for corrosion on the alloy exhaust pipe that is after the riser (which is stainless). Later ones apparently have an anode which should have been there from the start. Volvo don't seem to good with that sort of thing!
