Volvo D6-330 won’t rev above 2500

Good luck Shane.
Having been out today it now appears that we have a prop bush problem too (port side front prop seems to have moved backwards ! Loss of speed at given rpm and when port drive engaged in reverse I get a grating noise - front prop touching rear I think).
I have a spare set, so will see if I can get them swapped over this week before we start our three week holiday next Saturday.
Always happens just before a holiday !

Mike

sorry to misunderstand legs and props but if props slipping why cant the engine rev higher surly if prop slipping engine revs easier but put me right pls

If the prop is slipping on its bush, it's a bit like driving around in your car with your foot permanently on the clutch. You're revving the nuts off the engine but the car isn't going any faster.

But this maxed at 2500 rpm , it was the none bushed side that couldn,t reach it’s range cos the bushed just reved up chewing up rubber .
Both are needed to plane .

There are 2 engines, one is fine, the other has a broken prop bush. The one with the broken prop bush is revving high but doing little work because the prop is slipping, leaving the other good engine to do all the work, but it isn't man enough to do the work of 2 engines so can't rev beyond a lowish rpm. So you know you have a problem, but you think it is with the engine that can't rev,but in reality the problem is with the engine that is revving.

Porto, I can't tell if you are agreeing with me, or not. Iirc, the good side made 2500, the bushed side made wot (3300? 3500? Can't remember).

got you very interesting and asked my bionde swimbo to remember so may be asking again lol

I take it all back about the French. The engineer I am using has just whatsapp’d me to answer a question I posed yesterday after he told me it was a confirmed bushed/slipped prop.

My question was : is there a recommended repairer who could replace the bushes. His response was : no way. You need to buy new props.

The good thing is our wedding anniversary is coming up so I now know what the present will be!

As a company we keep 4 of each bush in stock all the time. We diagnosed bushed props on a customers boat on Saturday, rebushed them the same day, waited 24hrs for the lubricant to dry and refitted them this afternoon so the customer could leave for Ibiza early tomorrow morning. There should be plenty of Volvo dealers there that can rebush props.

Update - So I have sourced a new set of props here in the UK and they leave today via a brown van and are being sent direct to the guy who will fit them for me with me present in the slings of a local to me yard. This way I will see how to do the job when it needs to be done next.

Why did I go for new over refurb - well the time it was going to take for the boat to be lifted, blocked off, props off, shipped, repaired and shipped back, props fitted, boat lifted back in the water I wasn't too far from new props and a fit in slings. I can then get the old set repaired and carry them as spares for when the other old set let go. Having seen how to fit them on the hard I can then consider doing it myself if required.

Additionally I got a bunch of other VP stuff send with the shipment and saved on cost and shipping.

As an example I got a pair of props for £1400, in France I was being quoted €2000 plus tax. So actually I have saved a fortune. Lucky me!

Good news. You'll see that swapping the props over is actually pretty straightforward - iirc you need a 32mm socket for the rear nut, and the special vp tool (which is not expensive) for the front nut. 1/2" knuckle bar and an extension bar and you're good to go. You'll also want a block of wood to stop the props from spinning while you're spannering, but any old gash you find in the yard will do. It's worth keeping a spare set of the rear prop nuts as well - some dealers replace them every couple of years (they are basically just big nylocs).

How did you know what prop size they were

Another Bavaria 37 HT owner with the same engines told me what he had fitted when he had the same problem. I figure that the chances of Bavaria fitting different props pretty low.

thats lucky it would be a goot tip for everyone to take note when boat is out .

S, bringing this slightly older thread back to life ... We arrived down in PV last night and took the boat out today. Coincidentally my stbd drive showed all the same signs as yours of being bushed - quick to accelerate, port wouldn't go last 2500 rpm (wot 3500), port using waaay more fuel and even running a bit hotter. Spent a very pleasant afternoon lazing around at La Garoupe, then on the way back I called in at De Stefano on PV. Helpfully they lifted the boat straight away and I removed the rear stbd prop which was obviously bushed. Stuck my spare prop on, splashed back in and tested - all solved, pleasingly.

Anyway - I now have a prop for rebushing; where did you use to get yours done?

My bush went wonky(!) due to grounding while berthed up.
Steel Developments re-bushed it for a reasonable price last season.

Jimmy,

We have just had our new props fitted and I can’t find anyone in France to do the work to rebus he the prop so I’m taking them back to the U.K. and will either use Steel Development or I found another place on the south coast of England. Not sure which yet.

Don’t start me on my run of luck. Will bring you up to date.

Just to tidy this up.

We had a full set of new VP G7 props fitted. I ordered the set as I will rebush the ones just taken off and then refit these to the other leg and take those props as spares.

I ordered the props from Keypart and got a great price as well us very good shipping to France where they arrived in 3 days. Fitted in the slings of a local port (St Jean) and there has been no reoccurrence of the fault.

I have the old props in my hold luggage and are taking them back to the U.K. for rehubbing.

Jimmy, think we can negotiate a job lot??
