Have another case of raw water seeping out from engines (D6-310's, 2006, 220 hrs) and leaving lots of white powder residues in bilges - both engines again /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Last problem was cover plate on charge cooler and this was covered under warranty last year - old plastic part replaced by a brass one. Has been OK since.

This time its coming from rear cover plate on heat exchanger and of course warranty expired now. Have been quoted £ 180 per plate /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif - total bill will be in excess of £ 500 I guess.

Anyone else come across this or have any comment?

The D4 series has similar issues, unfortunately it can set off a chain reaction as bearings will now have been sprayed with concentrated salt water.
Belt tension pulleys are at risk along with Alternators and starter motors.

Dont be afraid to put the fresh water hose down there and rinse it all away , wait for it to dry before turning isolators back on.

I would have thought that Volvo Penta HO will agree to replace these parts FOC as they are a known fault.

Hmm i've had similar problems with the raw water side of a D4, same ancilliaries just a shorter block, the raw water filter bucket cap didn't fit properly and consequently 'gave way' when over 2000rpm when under way and would fill the bilges up to the belts in about 4 minutes. Took a while to trace as we couldn't replicate on the berth as engine will only rev to 1500rpm in neutral. I must admit this is my first Volvo engined boat, previous was mercruiser and I am pretty disappointed with the marinized parts of these engines. You would expect Volvo to have invested plenty of effort on the marinized side of things. They have been producing marine engines for quite some time now and to have faults with raw water leaking into the boat is unforgivable. I also had problems early on with the drive leg, apparently the ram end caps were made out of aluminium and behaved like anodes (DOH marinization again!) and eroded leaking hydraulics everywhere, that was covered under warranty but I am anxious every time I use the boat as I am not sure what I will find next. I have a small leak at the moment that I can't trace, not a big one just means the difference between a completely dry bilge which was the case for the first 2 years I had the boat and a small amount no more than a cup full of water. My last boat always had a wet bilge but the mercruiser engine never went wrong in 6 years of service and cost little to maintain. I currently have an intermittent stalling problem on my D4 which requires and engineer to fix, hopefully will be tomorrow, but requires an engineer with volvo computer etc. These are in my view unnesessarilly complicated engines that few people really know how to support/diagnose and fix.

The ridiculously short warranty doesn't inspire confidence either I think Volvo should re-think the warranty for a 3 year parts and labour and then a further 2 parts only.

My boat is a really simple single engine set up and shouldn't have cost me the down time it has, most of last season it was unreliable, half of the season before completely unuseable and this season so far stalling problem at low speed means it hasn't been out to sea yet just a run around the marina several times. oh and only 110 hours use to date since 2006.

I will think seriously next time about not having another Volvo D4 or D6 engine in my next boat. I think I will opt for a CMD next time.

Thanks for all replies guys.

After further investigation last night using on-line parts catalogue it appears that the part has been superceded but today talking with local Volvo engineer the new part is still plastic.

So engineer today has cleaned original caps up, new O-rings fitted and some sealant around O-Rings. Fingers crossed this cures it - have a feeling seepage and white powder will start building up again but will have to wait and see.

Also just to clarify the end-cap in question is where the raw water comes into the engine on oil filter assembly.

Will let you know how things go in due course.

d6 engine cut out when manouvering when hot

have had boat from new and when enginesget hot and am manouvering in marina engines cut out.Have called out same enginers who service boat, but when they arrive, say 2days later, no problems on fault system and all OK.
On last trip port engine packed up,then starb.NEW ENGINNER ARRIVED NO FAULTS FOUND BUT SAID A volvo bulletin had been sent out 4 1/2 years ago and problem was when engines got hot it caused the gear control unit to tell EVC control unit to close engine down, and if this hapened new unit should be fitted. He checked engine numbers and said they were in middle of 3 engine numbers reported on bulletin. Now Agent is saying fault never reported as sticking cables, I never said they were, only engines would not start.has any body had these symptons, and any outcome from Volvo Agents.
boat is now 6 years old.
