Hello

I'm wondering if you or somebody you know has experienced any Volvo D4/D6 engine failures. In Norway we are currently working on a case where about 30 engines have failed most likely due to dry fuel which cases an injector problem and a cranked injector copper sleeve.

Such an engine failure might not seem to be caused by an injector, but mostly such a failure is caused by loose of coolant due to a blown cap plug. Some engines also have a hole in the block.

If you know of any failed/damaged D4/D6, please PM me with the story. This will be very useful information as input.

We had a new type of D6 failure last week, a brand new Windy Khamsin was on its delivery trip from Arendal to Stavanger when one motor died without warning. The EVC system told us it had experienced a loss of pressure in the fuel rail.
We pulled the motor and found that the nut holding the drive gear to the shaft of the injection pump had come loose and worked its way along the shaft until it reached the back of the motor block (these pumps are on the rear driven by a gear train at the rear) and generated so much friction it welded itself to the block and then the key on the shaft sheared causing the pump to stop instantly with resultant engine failure.
We had to chisel the nut off the block with a big hammer and cold chisel, a new nut and key was fitted WITH Loctite! and all is well again.

This is probably my neighbor in the marina! (But is a different case),

I have posted this to check if there could be similar failures around the world. I can not belive that this is just happening in one country.

Barely competent to even open the motor-room hatch ... I still would like to add my bit ....
- on viewing boats of late and asking about the "new" D3, D4 and D6 varieties (I had prev. a KAD 300 that ran like a dream and quite economical), both the Bavaria and Nimbus dealers said that the latest engines (from 2006) are much improved over the earlier releases which is why they keep tinkering with the HP.

Nimbus reckon they have not had a D4 or D6 problem in any 2006 or later boat todate - but maybe this is sales bull ?

However, was there not a thing some months ago about some bad fuel up north causing problems with injectors ?

Postscript .... I do know of two out of the box Beneteau's that have had VP failure during seatrials with potential buyers and both times it was down to "EVC" (engine management ?) problems I was informed.

Think you may find it as South West (Vestlandet....)

If you understand my native tongue, you may find the thread below ...on a Norwegian Forum of interest on this subject ... loads of speculations and thoughts ... and I'd hazard to say that most stem from lack of information from Volvo and the concern that it is highly probable that "my next boat may have one of these" ....

Hello again svening and welcome,

The Uk will not have seen many Volvo Penta injector issues this year for two reasons

This year has been bad weather and engine hours are well down with small trips.

And there are so many other D4/D6 problems that the boats in regular use have spent much of the year on the hard.

My D4/260 has 450hrs on the clock now, no problems (that's a dangerous thing to say, and I will probably regret it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

From what I have read, the injector issues do seem to be related to fuel in Scandanavia.

Over 100 hours on our D4 225 this year and still sweet as a nut, in fact no problems since new.
Now I too am going to have to walk around with my fingers crossed all day /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

2006 boat with single D4 260 with 200 hours, only problem has been with stearing rams/hydrolics, oh and an overheat alarm went off cause she'd been sat for a while and the drive was weeded up, quick clean and all is fine again /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Have 2 x D6 310's and just reached 200 hrs since Aug 2006.

No problems at all other than stbd fuel filters this year - touch of the bug in one tank - and also slight leaking seawater around chargecooler end caps (both engines) I think they are called. First signs are white powdery residue. Volvo agents replaced both end caps for an upgraded brass type under warranty and no problems since.

Might regret this post /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

We have a D3 driving a Nimbus - now run around 230 plus hours.

Twice shortly after the engine was started - ten or fifteen minutes running time, a very loud bang came from the engine. We were not on board on the second occasion, but two engineers were. Initially their conclusion was that all injectors would need to be replaced, however at well over three hundred £'s apiece we had second thoughts. Running the engine, and testing, they decided the fault lay in number three injector, so this was replaced. We've since run the boat back to Poole from Penryn and all seems fine.

On another issue, for some reason these engineers tested the compression, their reading gave this as being on all cylinders just 180 PSI, but they said it should have been over three hundred. They told us Volvo could give no explanation as to the reason.

I did take our bill detailing all this onto the Volvo stand at Southampton boat show. The person who examined this showed great interest, and has retained this copy. So far, no further comment.

I have a 2006 D4-225 in a 26 ft Striper. Two problems with engine. Trim tab gets wet and screws up computer. Engine will not turn over 1000 RPM. Also engine stalls for no reason when trying to drive onto trailer. Check on Stripers Owners Club web site. Others have had problems also with boost etc.

Hi our company in vanuatu has a cat with two D6 310,s after two months and about 400 hrs the port engine stared using coolant,we pulled the engine and found that the no1 cylinder had cracked in the block and the exaust manafold had cracked we got warranty on the new block.the engine have now done 1600 hrs and we have had the head of the port twice and the head of the starb three times with injectors comeing loose carbon build up around the injectors this then over heats the brass sleaves and they crack, the engine starts useing coolant and the when you stop the cylinder fills up with coolant and the engine hydraulics,We have just done one again on the 28 january,I think that I am going to have to remove and re set the injectors every 200 hrs does any one have any ansewers ?????
