Hi
Maybe one for Volvopaul or spannerman?
Took my boat for a run early this morning after not using her for 5 months or so . The port engine would not rev to its maximum 3500rpm. Stbd engine fine. I also noticed that i had used more fuel from the stbd tank? I have racor 3201t pre-filters with clear bowls. Fuel looks clean, no debris or sludge. Checked fuel valves and all set ok. When engaging drive the port eng would not get above 2250 rpm. I could hear the compresser but not confident i could hear the turbo take over? Maybe because not revving high enough to cut in? Stbd eng by itself will rev to 3000 rpm as she struggles to get onto plane. Both working together stbd will rev out at max 3500rpm port only manages 3200 rpm and unable to increase eng speed if port throttle pushed forward. . Fuel filters due a change but i religiously treat my fuel .

No errors showing on my EVC display and all temps, pressures etc fine.

Any thoughts or ideas to check will be much appreciated.

Cheers

Keith

sounds like blocking filters i have had same problem , i fitted vacume gauge you can tell straight away any problems with filters before they cause any problems.:o

Sounds just like my recent experience, no known bug issues, until we hit the estuary, then after a few hours the Starboard tank ceased to supply fuel, tank looked fine but supply pipe mesh coated in candy-floss!

Soltron now added...

It sounds like a boost temp/pressure sender issue-if it was fuel related you'd expect to have fault codes. You can either check the sender on the port engine with a multimeter or simply swap it side to side-if the problem moves across then there's your issue.

Bit left-field, but is the boat moored stbd-side to? Could there be more growth on the port prop/outdrive? [In fairness it would need to be a _lot_ more for the symptoms you're describing, but worth a mention].

Cheers
Jimmy

I have lost count now how many boost temp senders I have fitted but for some reason they affect the 4 cylinder engine more, maybe as it doesn't have the torque of the six pot engine, the d4 225 is even worse as it doesn't have a compressor. If it fails to work correctly it doesn't show up as a fail on the vodia as the parameters it outputs are too wide for the engines ecu to recognise so you have to "play" to find if its failed or not.

5 months no use is the bottom clean, have you had a service and check over since? .

Hi Everyone.

Many thanks for all your replies.

Jimmy/ portofino . Props treated with Propspeed, some growth but no different than on Stbd leg, and stbd eng performed perfectly. Boat backed onto berth with Sun onto both drive legs.

andyroonot/ volvopaul. Interesting re boost /temp sensor. I assume if faulty this would stop turbo cutting in? Can you explain how to check unit with a multimeter. Resistence check?

Many thanks again

Keith

It doesn't stop the turbo cutting in, its limits the amount of fuel injected, which in turn determines how much boost you get as this is dependant on how much exhaust gas you generate from fuel burned.
Got one in the shop now, wouldn't go over 2500rpm, put the Vodia on it and its reads 101 C air temp, engine thinks its in the Kalahari desert so ECU gives very little fuel thus degraded performance.
Seeing as you have two engines the easiest thing is to swap the sensors over, they sit under the black top cover on the same side and just rear of the oil filters, its a flat sensor with a plug and single bolt holding it to the top of the inlet manifold. About 10 mins work.

Hi spannerman. Thanks for info. I will swap over as you suggest and see if problem moves to stbd eng.

Out of interest do you know of a way to check sensor with a multimeter? Also would i not get any info on my EVC display regarding such a problem or associated faults?

Many thanks again

No, you won't get a fault because the engine thinks it is being told the correct information, ie, it is getting a valid temperature reading; the fact that its telling it its hotter than it really is causes the issues, but no faults as it doesn't think there is one.

PM me an e-mail address & I'll send the multimeter test details tomorrow, plus the chart for what a good sensor should be reading

Hi Everyone.

Thanks for replies so far. Latest is that i have fitted a new boost pressure/ temp sensor , also cleaned both sets of drive leg props. Port engine will stay in sync up to 2700RPM ish then lags behing stbd engine that very happily revs to the max of 3500RPM

Once up on the plane port engine will struggle to 3100RPM! Havent changed filters as both pre filters have clear Red Diesel in the inspection bowls. Any other idea,s or is it time to call on the Vodia Tool!!!

Cheers

Any last items any on

Take the flat cover off the top of the engine , behind it is the turbo pipe from the turbo to the intercooler , it has two hose clips on the very short piece of rubber hose , maybe a hose clamp is loose not giving full boost pressure.

Hi All

Thanks for all your replies. Spot on Aquatom, it was the Stbd rear prop Bushing gone. Had prop re-bushed at Steel Developments.

Thanks to Andy for all your advice.

Best Wishes
