Hi all,

we have some issues with our Volvo D3-220.
The engine is nearly one year old, has clocked up 150 hours and is installed in a 1,7t rib.
At the moment, the engine doesn't get over 3.000rpm, normally it should do 4.000rpm.
I think the tubo "kicks" in, but only very "softly".
When slowing down to about 1.300rpm the engine starts to produce blue smoke.
The local vp-dealer blamed the injectors at first, cleaned them up, but they obviously weren't the cause for the problem. They also had a look at the turbo, but said that it is ok.
We're a bit out of ideas at the moment.
On friday we'll do the next test run.

Anyone here with a suggestion?

Thanks!
Chris

When the dealer "had a look at the turbo" does that mean that they actually did a boost check, or did they look at it and say "yes, that looks like a turbo"?

The Variable Geometry turbo and actuator used on the D3 can gum up, needing cleaning.

When was the boat last used, and did it perform 100% then?

Is the oil level normal, or dropping?

.

We're talking latest generation d3 here so a proper dealer should have come up with a proper answer via the vodia tool. A comp test can be carried out without injector removal as it carries out a percentage load test on each cylinder . Why they had injectors cleaned may be bollox as they were just looking for an answer. Is the engine using oil as blue smoke is burnt oil, white smoke is poor combustion which should show up on vodia. The later d3 is eliminated of early turbo issues. I'd be looking for another dealer/ engineer with the right gear.

Thank you for the answers.

@FP:
To be honest, I'm not quite sure if they did a boost test.
Yes, the boat did perform properly, vmax ca 41 knots @ 4000rpm.
The day before we lost power we covered 118nm in 3 3/4h, the engine was running perfectly. I couldn't see / hear / smell anything unusual. The next day the engine was fine for about half an hour, then I realised that the acceleration got worse. At first I thought it was because all of the gear on board, but that wasn't the cause.
It took another 30 min back to harbour, but there was no warning sing / sound at the helm.
When a local vp-dealer connected his vodia, there was no mistake showing up! This appeared during later test drives with him, maybe covering another 30 min.

Oil level was perfect until then, but I can't tell that it has dropped dramatically now.

Yes, I think we'll change the vp-dealer.

Thanks all!

Hi all,

big surprise, the engine is still not running. The last test run was without any (positive) result. Same weak performance like before. The gauge for the oil pressure on the raymarine display showed nearly 9 bar - a bit too much I think.
Now, two weeks later they told us they checked everything, but didn't find anything wrong. So now everything is put together, next test run should follow the next week. I think I already know the result...

Diff to tell exactly what's been " tested"
Blue smoke is burning oil
Higher than normal oil P suggest compression -even intermittently entering the sump = poss cracked/ faulty piston ring
On cars there is a crank breather/ filter thingy that can sometimes fail leading to excess oil burn - blue smoke- but the power is normal ,May be the advanced brain detects something and disallows higher RPM .but then the vodia would say so

Hi all,

we finally got a new engine block, after they found a small crack in the old one.

The new engine block has now run for 23 hours in the past 1,5 weeks - yesterday it failed again, producing loads of black smoke.
Max rpm is 1.300...

What next?

Chris

Black smoke is usually over fuel, or lack of air ... Though those V's had diagnostics to make thing simple...

KIS - air filter & air supply

more complex is compressor/turbo .....

Single failed injector would cause imbalance in running I would have thought... but then again, I am often wrong..

Sounds like the variable vane side of the turbo is gummed up . Take off and clean out with carb cleaner or similar .

stay close with a official , serious or main Volvo dealer, preferably one,
they should solve your problem under warranty, (claim the two year warranty)
it doesn't make sense to do self diagnostic / repair, the D3 is a sophisticated machine, with lots of sensors, digitally controlled, etc...
volvo should be able to cure your problem.

had quite a few issues with a pair of D3-190's (older generation)
but all cured very correctly by Volvo, I only had to raise my voice ones, very briefly .....

I still love my D3's, compact powerfull package
no serious alternative available in that segment.. imho

Quite right Bart and they sound awesome under acceleration when the wastegate kicks in.

The engine runs fine again.
A hose from the turbo with a sensor inside was defective. It got replaced, everything fine.
We'll be on the water on sunday and test her extensively.
Everything was done under warranty.

You're right - we didn't find any alternatives too.

+1
Ours is growling quite nice.
If it works. ;)

Thanks all!!
