Good Morning,
I am looking to go shaft drive diesel from my current outdrive petrol.

I am thinking possibly Jeanneau 655 or Antares 6 - great cockpit seating - and note that there seems to be a choice of either Yanmar 4JH4-HTE 110 hp or Volvo D3 110hp.

I seem to remember some horror stories regarding the Volvo and have recently heard some tales of woe regarding the Yanmar.

Can anyone out there shed a little advice please on the engines.

Thanks in Advance

Paul

I can't comment on the Yanmar, but the D3 is a 5 cylinder diesel designed for Volvo cars by a combination of AVL (block/crank/pistons), and Ricardo (cyl head/cams/valves). Volvo Penta has used it in a number of power levels, going to above 200hp. So the 110 spec should be very lowly stressed, and with good maintenance should be reliable. Actually, either of these engines, properly maintained should be OK.

The latest d3 is mostly rid of all the woes it had in its early form. It's a totally different base unit engine now and rid of the stupid turbo and ecu parameters that gave all the problems in its early life.

Personally I'd go for the yanmar.

Hi Volvo Paul,
Thanks for your input, I was hoping for your take on this. You have confirmed my initial thoughts.

Many many thanks again and best regards.
