Everything I have looked at has one of these, any comments or things to look out for?

Many of these engines when installed did not reach full operating temperature and therefore doesn't heat the water in the calorifier very well. There is a VP modification to the heat exchanger which is done under warranty 'if requested'! The mod works well though it does require removal of the heat exchanger and there is a possible need for a header tank afterwards to stop the engine spitting fluid into the bilge.
The gearbox fitted to most engines makes a noticeable clonk when engaging gear - apparently it is due to a rather crude lever design. Some gearboxes had a problem with drive which can be checked by any VP agent against the gearbox number.
The engine is very smooth, quiet and powerful - I have no real concerns with it and it is relatively easy to get at all service points though you need a lot of oil for a change.

Nice low revving very smooth engine but there have been some gear selection problems, especially reverse. Would be interested in other experiences.

Very popular OE engine so I've sailed with a lot of them over the last couple of years. It's compact and has a good power to weight ratio. Invariably they run smoothly and usually quietly, though this is as much to do with installation as the engine itself. Its easy to do basic servicing. RCD makes some good points about gearboxes etc. I haven't been particularly aware of clunky gearshifts which can often be a feature of brand new engines anyway.
