I have just been told that because a little bit of salt water has been getting into number 4 cylinder over the years due to an undersized exhaust pipe (as fitted when the boat was re engined in 2002) it caused the engine to seize.
This happened after a completely normal days operation 3 weeks ago.but only found out when i went to start it last weekend.

The volvo people have said between £5-6000 for the rebuild!!!!

I am shocked, not only has the summer cruise not happened but i have been hit with this, it must be cheaper to put in a new one, anyone recomend anyone local, so that I can get a comparison please??

Thanks

Blimey that's awful.

I used John Rook at Althorne Marine last year. He took the engine out, had the sump repaired, took the head off, decoked, reground the valves, had the injectors serviced, changed all the filters and reinstalled with two new mounts - £800 plus parts and crainage. I thought that was pretty good. He is based at Fambridge but worth talking to 07939100822

David, thats a blow.

I have a man who will come and look at it in detail, and give you a quote. I presume its at Shotley? Do you want to go sailing again this season?

Simon is resident in Burnham 07703-567630. Worth a call to see if you can work something out.

:eek::eek:

It IS cheaper to put in a new one.
I just paid only a few hundred more for a brand-spanking new Nanni N4.60.
Beta similar (slightly cheaper) price.

PS: just checked - our Nanni would suit your boat perfectly - similar size, slightly (7hp) more powerfull.

Not good news David and sorry to hear it. I can only second John Rooke who I have also used a few times.

Thanks all, I will try John and have got a enquiry out to Beta (i had one in a previous boat) I would like to go sailing again this season as I have hardly done any yet.
I feel really gutted that this has happened, the engine has done about 800 hrs and looks pristene.
managed to book a mobile home holiday in Brittany for 10 days for £1400 for us, as all disapointed, add that to the cost.
Got home tonight and the fridge is on the blink!
Staying in bed on friday (13th)

Left a message for Simon to call me - Thanks

It can't be that bad if it was OK only three weeks ago!
I don't know the engine but if you can remove the head and soak the piston with easing oil (white spirit works wonders), you may be able to free it by rocking the crank back and forth.
Make sure you turn the engine backwards and don't force it forwards - it may jam up harder.
As I said before, rock it back and forth and I bet you free it.
You may not even need to remove the head if you can get oil down the injector hole.
£5k plus is silly money. :(

I am pretty much in the hands of the 'experts' here, I would have thought that you were right, but I tried to move the engine and it was completely solid.
There is a build up of salt crystals apparently in number 4 cylinder and inlet and exhaust valves have to be replaced as well as the piston, they 'think' that a little water has been splashing back and drying off in the cylinder for some/all the time and as the outlet is apparently undersized (it has to be internally 57mm apparently) they think the previous owner saved or was advised that the through hull outlet did not need to be changed and that this has caused the problem which has taken 6 years to manifest itself!
