exhaust leg replacement.jpg Hi team, hoping someone can help me with this. I've bought the stainless steel replacement exhaust leg for my Volvo D2-55. (I'm a long way from my boat currently).

I note that the original exhaust leg seems to have a sensor in the top (circled in green). Which I'm assuming is a temperature sensor. Which would be recording the raw water temperature in the leg / the temperature of the leg itself (gas+raw water...).

I'm not sure if this is an aftermarket add on by the previous owner. I won't have time to get the holes/threads done on the stainless steel leg.

Any ideas where this temperature/sensor input would be going? Why it has been put in?

Can I get away without using it...?
Thank you.
Nick

Its not temperature sender its a bi-metalic switch to set of some kind of alarm if the elbow gets to hot (no water flow) . Fasten it to the same place with a jubilee clip.
That's exactly what it is; just a home-brew water injection/pump failure detector to prevent overheating the exhaust hose.

Don't know if you're thinking of refitting it, but I can recommend fitting a temperature alarm. The subject has come up before, but I've just fitted a Silicon Marine alarm (Home: Silicon Marine). Much easier than drilling a hole in your new exhaust! Considering that a loss of cooling water can quickly melt the hose and possibly the muffler (as me how I know!) I think it's essential.
