VicS, Thanks for that. Our manuals are on board in Spain, hence inability to access directly. Your online website was ideal, Ta.
Interestingly [for me if no-one else], the manual doesn't mention the part played by the breather plug when checking the oil level . . . any thoughts on this?
Regards
S.
Hi 1sjt and Vics,The breather spews out if the oil in the s drive gets too hot. I've replaced the oil in the s drive (120SE) with Volvo fully synthetic gear oil (€66 for 3L in Italy) as specified by themselves and the problem of the breather overflowing has disappeared.Mostly occurred after day long running on warm canals/Saone etc.Less nappies around that area now! Good sailing
VicS - Reason for query is that our maintenance supplier accused us of tinkering with breather plug and hence residual spillage of ATF around bilge. We haven't been tinkering. When checking ATF oil level, I was advised to first remove the breather plug to allow the oil level to settle then replace firmly.
Paulclan - Interesting about the oil, I'll enquire as to the spec / make being used and, if appropriate, suggest that they try the fully synth.

Funny why you where advised to remove the breather plug when there is no mention of doing so in the owners manual .
Careful about the oil types. The 130S drives use Dexron Automatic Transmission Fluid but the 120S drives to which paulclan refers use a 15W-40 oil to API CD spec, in other words a diesel engine oil! He says he was advised to change to a synthetic gear oil, but off hand I dont know what viscosity grade would be appropriate.
I think it would be inappropriate to change from an ATF Dexron oil to a gear oil without advice directly from Volvo Penta.
EDIT: I have now found that the oil recommended for the 120S-E is in fact a synthetic 75W-90 Gear oil to API GL-5 spec despite what the original owners manuals might have said
