Oooops. Then I stand deeply corrected. Sorry. Yes, the oil cooler feels the oil system pressure and a gasket failure there will definitely have serious consequences.

Found this in Man service manual, don't know whether it is relevant... I'm not that technical... prefer sandy bay, sunshine & G&T on aft deck !!
Fitting flat seals / gaskets
Flat seals / gaskets are often inserted with sealing agents or adhesives to make fitting them easier or to achieve better sealing. Flat seals may slip in operation due to the “sew- ing-machine” effect, in particular if they are used between parts with different rates of lin- ear expansion under heat (e.g. aluminium and cast iron), and leaks may then occur.
Example:
the cap of the front crankshaft seal. If a sealing agent or an adhesive is used here the flat seal will move inwards in the course of time as a result of the different expansion rates of the materials. Oil will be lost, for which the shaft seal may be thought to be responsible.

Agreed that gasket sealants can cause this but the gaskets I have seen fail have been assembled at the factory. They fail at the bottom aft corner of the oil cooler cover where the bolt spacing is wider than the rest.

Thanks aquatom... seems that it is a manufacturing or maintenance fault, I will certainly bear it in mind... looks like this thread is getting technical !! Bearing in mind the cost of engines, it surprises me that the manufacturers don't have a system of advising owners when issues such as this arise.... or maybe they don't want to publicise their shortcomings, bad for business, but it's a small world & the unlucky owners would never buy their engines again if they experience these sorts of problems! From conversations with owners of other engines this sort of issue is not isolated to Man's... I have had Volvo's & Cummins before, the Volvo's in a brand new Princess 45 blew a turbo in under 50 hours & Cummins a head gasket in the bay of biscay on delivery trip from Plymouth to the Med.... of course the manufacturers insisted the problem was isolated !!!

All makes of engines have problems but at least you can get Volvos fixed almost anywhere and most of the parts are available within a day or two!
