Volvo compressor oil - a possible alternative source

But then this bottle shows ISO VG 80. I'm not near my Volvo bottle atm so can't comment

I think you need the ISOVG80, it used to be VG68 but now you can only buy the VG80 volvo branded. The 68 or 80 is its average viscosity at 40 °C mm²/sat and its price is way off at VP original so good initiative finding alternatives.

Sorry guys but £20 worth of oil will cover your supercharger for 1000 hours unless it goes milky in colour, what is the point of trying to outsource another cheaper oil that your not 100% sure will work.

I would price up a new supercharger then decide what oil your going to buy next time.

+1
and from memory it's every 5 years and one bottle serves two on the KAD 300 ,s
So if this none VP stuff is 1/2 price you save a tenner like 0000.1 % of total cost of boat ownership ?
For what ? Potentially knackering your Superchargers !

While we're on the subject of maintenance - how often do you lot actually replace your drive belts? I do it every year, which this year means 40 hours ago - and I now have a very large collection of lightly-used but seemingly still very serviceable belts on the boat. Do I actually need to change these every year, or would every other year (or say every 100 hours) do? I don't have the service schedule in front of me so I don't actually know what it says.

On my last boat kad 300 a belt change would be best every time you filled up with diesel. Ok slight exaggeration but it did munch them.

The t40 d6310 I think is on condition of 5 years. I just check mine and have not changed in 3.5 years so far.

Thanks for this. I did just find the service schedule for mine (also D6's) and in fact it says just to tension them every year. I wonder why I've always been advised to replace them? Oh well, no matter - that's £100 saved off the next service then, I'll put that in the kebab fund instead.

Paul - to help with a discussion - what is the correct supercharger oil change interval on a kad32 engine (or any kad engine) ?

Belts -service schedule says " inspect ck tension" only-which means chage them when worn / cracked .

Re black dust disease -the cure is sand down/ emery the pulleys and paint them with waxoil .Its the rust on the pully that Chaffes the belt= dust and fracture /snapped belt
I change mine 5 years 200 hours ish ?
And periodic ck tensions along with fluids etc weekly
Since doing this no snapped belts thus far

Paul I agree with you 100%. BUT, I change my supercharger oil every season (so about every 150 hours). My reason for outsourcing would be common sense; *IF* you can find the same product but for a fraction of the price you'd be crazy not to go for the alternative.

The reason I was asking on here was to find out if the above oil I linked to is the same thing or not?

I'm in the same position as you - change my belts every season and now have a collection of belts (used for 'emergencies' that has never happened!). This year i'm trying something different - I have taken the tension off all my belts while she'd laid up. In the spring i'll re-tension the belts and see if they behave. If not i'll just replace them.

Sounds like a good plan.

Fwiw I have lost a belt once on the D6 - but this was a strange power steering pump failure (the pulley moved on the pump shaft, and that misalignment in turn killed the belt) and not a primary failure of the belt itself.

A friend of mine uses a spray-on product on his belts. I haven't used it, but he swears by the name of it. I think it has some generic name like "belt grip" or similar. He reckons in his 8 years owning the boat he's never had to change the belt.

These aren't Volvo belts though, forget what engines they are but i'm guessing it's just power steering and alternator belts he has

On the trucks at work the flat hyvo belts its change every 4 years, regardless of milage, some can be well over 500k, on the smaller cummins there is no set interval.
The old rule of thumb I have always used with flat hyvo belts is if its starting to crack replace it, but Im pretty certain you can have up to approx 25 cracks per inch of belt depending on its width!
