My air filter on my D2 55 has started to break down.I eventually found a spare in its original Volvo packaging that I had bought in NZ for over £30... a piece of foam rubber. When I went to open the package the conents were like dust. presumably caused bythe heat of where we are in Malaysia....although the engine musst be just as hot!

Does anyone know of an alternative fitting. I am tempted to put a piece of muslin cotton around the original frame instead. Any thoughts?

I have the same and ended up paying a fortune for 10p worth of polypropilene foam and a 50p steel coil. It is the same compound used for hi fi speakers suspensions and it cumbles mainly because of exposure to UV and oxygen. Next time I will fit one of those fancy sport filters sold by halfords.

I have left over from my Long Track Racing and Speedway days three new, fully wrapped sheets of air filter foam for competition motorcycles.

They are about 18mm thick, 30x40cm ish in size.

I used to shape and superglue them to fit my intakes on the dirt bikes. Petrol and methanol proof-diesel should be no problem.

I will sell these to interested parties at £6.00 posted to UK.

No chance unless you PM me real quick as I leave the UK untill April on Sunday.

Not seeking to hijack the thread, but what, if any, are factors affecting the choice of an air filter? I am replacing the air filter on my VP 2003, an original volvo part is no longer available. ASAP (amongst others) have air filters on sale to suit the 52mm spigot, but what are the size and type selection factors? Swept engine volume? Environment conditions? Any other?

Might be worth having a look here, they have a selection guide. I fitted K&N last year at half the cost of the standard items, and now they just need an annual wash.

Better than the D1-30 filter - this is a plastic box with foam inside, but it doesn't open. You're supposed to pay for a whole new box!

Interesting, I measured our VP 2003 spigot with an outside diameter of 49mm so have been looking at the K&N universal filters. Several at £30 would fit.

Thanks, problem is that I am not sure where to begin to choose! Measured the spigot o/d with a caliper at the weekend, 52mm was the measured size, engine 1993 vintage

Thanks all..there seem to be motorbike ones that would fit. No idea if they would have more or less air flow. Methinks not a problem.

Then I will be measuring again before ordering just in case. I plan to choose one that will fit as the rear engine access panel is quite close so length and diameter are quite critical. Not too worried about airflow, hopefully K&N have worked that all out when designing the various shapes for a 2" spigot. I did e mail them about something and they replied very quickly.

VP doesn't consider an air filter to be essential. My MD 22 has no air filter. I should say, not just mine. It's designed that way.

The Volvo Penta air filter for the 2003 is still available, although it's silly money. However, it's only a tin can with metal mesh inside, so why not just wash it out?

It is a long time since the filter was cleaned, to be honest if it ever has been. There was a previous thread where the washing the air filter seemed perhaps ineffectual. For a minimal cost, had reckoned that buying a non branded off the shelf filter seemed a better approach.
