Hi,
I have 2 x AD41p 200hp motors in my 36 ft launch with DPD sternlegs. They were installed new in 1997 and have approx 4500 hours on them.
Over the last month the port motors gauges have started misbehaving. This motor has the house alternator (Balmar 150amp), fridge compressor and power steering on it. It has always run .5 to 1 degree higher temp at the same rev range than the starboard motor, but I have always put this down to the extra load.
I now have the temp, oil pressure and volt gauages all misbehaving. Initially, once at cruising revs all show slightly out, temp a bit high (90 not 87-88) oil pressure down a bit and volts not quite at 14 when my battery monitor confirms that the alternator outputing 14.4 volts. After another 15 minutes it all gets worse with the temp gauge rising to 92-93, oil pressure dropping further and the volt gauge dropping to 13.7 or so. I know none of these are real. A temp gun reveals the motor at 88.5, the BEP battery monitor is still showing 14.4 and I get no alarms from the other temp and oil pressure sensors.
When this first started I only really noted the temp, as you do when it climbs over 90! So I have removed the gauge and cleaned all connectors and cleaned and tightened the push on spade connectors. I also cleaned the main earth connection and checked all earth connections at the motor.
Also as soon as I need to use the instrument lights all the gauges on both port and starboard panels do more of the same, ie temp up, oil pressure down volts down, none of which is real.
So any ideas on any likely primary cause or point me at a most likely cause before I start removing and replacing all the spade connectors at the panel end for the port motor would be welcome.
And I'd love to get rid of the strange reaction to turning on the instrument lights at night, it is very annoying!
cheers
