hi all,

i have purchased 2 ad31a engines, second hand, from a reputable marine engineer. he did not have the time to overhaul them for me until next year.
i am going through the processes of overhauling all the basic stuff i can and will eventually compression and test run the engines after i have done this.
in the mean time i'm doing a little bit of research with regarding having the engines stripped and rebuilt with new rings (as i am 100% sure it doesn't need any new pistons or liners).
i have emailed a few engineers and had very quick responses from all, but i would like to know who has had good experiences with any in the north west/north wales area.
i have read a few reviews (very bad) about west end marine yesterday so will probably steer away from them now.

i look forward to your advice.
ta,

ta,

Unless they have run for more than 2500 to 3000 hours I would not be thinking about fitting new rings unless you know there is an issue , in my experience of this model of engine it’s the liners that wear , unless you de glaze or hone the liners the new rings may not bed in the worn bores, bores wear oval as the side thrust of the piston does this .
Unless there are piston blowby , poor starting or high oil consumption leave them alone .
I would remove all the coolers strip clean and reseal them .

How many hours have they done .

hi paul,

thanks for the info. i'm learning at the moment about these engines. i am in the middle of stripping down all of the coolers and have cleaned the majority of them. that's interesting to know about the liners and wear thank you! there is only one issue i have which is on one of the engines the cartridge is stuck in the aftercooler, do you know the best method to free this?
i think what i'll do then is strip and rebuild all of the coolers, pumps and service them. i'm going to send the other turbo off for overhaul too and once this has all been done i'll compression test and go from there.
ta,
