Volvo 60 Masts...

Does anybody else apart from me think its faintly ridiculous that the Volvo Ocean Race teams didn't figure out that the most likely place where they'd lose a mast is in the Southern Ocean and therefore think it a good idea to position a spare mast in South America.

Only now are Team SEB scrabbling around figuring out how to get a mast from Gothenburg [didn't know Volvo made masts ] to the stricken boat [or vice versa].

You'd think the basic mast was a standard unit and that the various teams would club together to position one....

The Volvo 60 masts are all custom made. Not somthing you'll get off the shelf at Seldens. With money no problem, why not keep the spare at your home base?

Incidentally, Volvo might make a few cars, but they ceretainly don't make masts, or small marine diesels come to think of it.
