Hi, can someone advise on how often the bellows on a 280 leg should be changed, the boat is used on rivers only (no salt water) if that makes a difference. Thanks

I think it depends on the condition, they need checking yearly for the condition of the bellow and make sure they are not split or anything, and also if the rubber is getting hard they are in need of changing

Hope this helps

I always had them changed every year, might have been a bit over the top. The 1 year I decided not to chage them they sprang a leak and it cost me a new gimble bearing as well.

Every two years is the normal advice but check every year and whenever possible.
It tends to be a bit like timing belts on cars which are usually every 50k. They can last a lot longer but if they go your in trouble.

leg service every 2 years. that's :
bellows
anodes
seals
Oil
and reverse latch lock springs (3 springs per outdrive)

As others have said normally every third year, but check condition on yearly lift out.If the boat is new to you previous owner may fib or have "forgotten" that it was actually 4/5/6 years since last changed so worth getting written proof of work having been carried out.Job can be done by yourself if you wish but is dirty and difficult to do if absolute beginner in boat fixing. You will have to get boat out of water and chocked up as high as possible in order to remove rams cables and assorted pins which may need heating to get out.Make sure you get correct bellows for both UJs + Exhaust and whatever. You can buy from Volvo or lots of pattern versions available.Worth considering mebbe is dismantle on first morning of first day spend afternoon cleaning all the perishing nooks and crannies before primer and top coat, leave overnight and fit leg following morning and anti foul in afternoon.
Ps.You will also want to change g/box oil while you are at it......
PPs. A mate will be handy to lift leg off/on.
