Having just removed my rams for servicing it looks like I may need a couple of replacements. No way am I paying £800 each from Volvo, the guy servicing them can make new ones from scratch at less than half that price, but I wonder have I got any alternatives. Any of you guys found a suitable replacement part or got any good second hand ones lying around. The legs are 280 power trim, a rare beast & not to many of them around by all acounts. I will be phoning Paul Grieve at Coastal Rides tommorow to see what he has got. Any ideas welcome,
Regards,
Eddie

Go find your local hydraulic specialist that deal in Earthmovers etc. they are probably standard units or certainly repairable using standard bits.
280 T drives aren't that common althouh Oldgit has them on his boat, h's the only one I've heard of.

Buy the kit much cheaper than buying them individually and you get all the bits and pieces not just the rams.

Almost any hydraulic specialist will make up a new piston and seals for a fraction of that cost . Look in your local yellow pages if no luck send me a PM and I will put you on to our local(Notts) company.

Mike,
Thanks for the note, I have got a guy like that doing them now, we run a fleet of offshore support vessels and he does all our hydraulic repairs. He also designs and builds units that launch and retrieve ROV's so I know I will get a good job done at a good price. The problem with these is that the cylinder has corroded around the top where the thred is so it is likely to need a compleat unit, and there is two of them!. I was really wondering if any one else had found an off the shelf replacement, from a Merc outboard/outdrive for example, or had a couple going begging.
Regards,
Eddie

Be very interested for future reference as to how you get on with this problem. Both my present boat and its predecessor had the 280T version, but had no problems with either.
Please take heart from the fact that I once had a Regal fitted with Mercruiser gear and it was 10 times as bad.Had to replace ram cylinders about every other season.
