Advice Please. . . After 4000 hr. Yes 4000 . My 2040 is still going strong but has developed some minor oil leaks. Particularly from the timing gear case gasket. Does anyone know please . . . . Can I remove the timing case cover without disturbing the timing gear / so I can change the gasket , as I'm confident I can manage this myself. . . . . Or will I have to disturb the timing gear ? . . . . as I think this may be beyond my D.I.Y. expertise . Normally I would have an expert engineer to do the job , but my boat is in Greece and it is very difficult to find an engineer one can trust , to do the job .

This might help. You may not disturb the timing gears but might have to remove components attached to them. This shows the timing marks and how to set.

Chuck some Super Moly Engine Saver in it first, and see if that does the trick before taking it apart. It's good for small oil leaks like that.

Yes you can remove the timing gear casing without disturbing the timing.

Are you sure its the gasket? I had a leak in that area for years and finally I discovered it was the miniature 'O' rings that seal the 'stop' lever shaft and the 'throttle shaft' etc. I changed all those 'O' rings and now have an oil tight engine again.

You will need to pull the crank shaft pulley off. Hot water and a puller does it for ours. You will also need to remove the raw water pump and in case you were wondering, you don't need to drain the engine oil.

Thanks Guy's

Thanks for all your replies , all look very helpful and encouraging . Now out of the water and winterising , so I will get the gaskets required and overhaul the salt water pump back in the U.K. ready to have a go at the leaks in the spring ready for next season. Good of you all to take the trouble thanks
again . . . . . Kruiser.

Thanks John,
Think I'll try the "o" rings first , I've had another look and it looks as if these may be the origin of the leak, not the timing cover gasket . and I'm taking the s/w pump home for overhaul in the winter so I will replace it's "o" ring as well . . . . Thanks very much . . . Dave Payton.( Kruiser )

Thanks Bobc,
I'm going to replace some "o" rings and see if they cure it but will try the Super Moly if it persists . Amazingly I've been told in Greece the engine has to be removed so I'm much obliged for all you guy's advice . . . . Dave P.

I expect you have worked out you still need to take the timing chain cover off to change the 'o' rings..
