hi,
posting on behalf of a friend, so please be patient...
new to him boat. engine 20? years old. salt water started pouring out rubber end caps at ends of heat exchanger. he changed the rubber caps, and now only a tiny amount from fresh side coolant reservoir overflow, just under coolant filler cap. he is going to pressure test the heat exchanger cylinder core. to eye it looks fine, channels are not furred up. we struggled to get the exhaust off the mixer elbow to check that it's not all carboned up. we may need to destroy the hose, or take off the elbow? although elbow looks a bit harder to remove then my 3 bolt Yanmar... there are 3 square headed bolts in the exhaust mixer elbow - any point in taking them out? do we see any more? or are they simply for a calorifier?
pics below (hopefully!) - first is front rubber end cap, heat exchanger matrix removed. second is me pointing at one of the square headed bolts.
new to me engine, so not sure what next. if exhaust elbow not furred up, maybe channels inside engine? (although what i could see looked good, and we have soft water up here). the seals of the rubber end caps to heat exchanger cylinder look good, although can see why they will bypass if too much pressure in raw water side. thanks!
