volvo 2003 sea water pump

I had to motor for 7 hours yesterday on my shakedown cruise having overhauled my pump in the winter as it leaked water. Now it leaks oil at an alarming rate. Would i have fitted the seal wrong or could it be the pump, the pump doesn,t leak water,

There are two seals in the pump. If it's leaking oil from the same hole that the water used to come out of, then it sounds as though the oil seal is damaged. If the oil's coming from anywhere else, then it's unlikely. You can download the workshop manual and the parts list from BlueMoment if you haven't already.

I did the same job on my pump this winter.

I believe that the oil can only come through via two routes. 1) The O-ring seal where the pump body goes into the engine block 2) The shaft oil seal that is identical to its water-catching brother further up the shaft.

To find the source, perhaps you could use the old technique of cleaning off and dusting the area with flour. The new oil path will be clear to see and you can then attack the relevant seal.

the easy check would be the O ring around the mating flange. If this is mis fitted or damaged then oil can get out there, but is easily remided taking care to refit. As stated the only other place is the engine side seal. If you renewed both seals in the overhaul and fitter the correct way around then my monies on the o ring.

As you say, there are two seals, one to keep the water in the pump, the other to keep the oil in the engine. To stop either leaking into the other there is a hole, that is where the water was leaking from, and I'll wager that is where the oil is leaking. The fact is that I would guess that you have fitted the oil seal the wrong way around, it needs to be the opposite way to the water seal.
