Volvo 2003 injectors

We had a leaking injector , and were surprised not to find a washer on the injector seat . After checking in the service manual we placed a copper washer on the seat and the leak problem was solved . Conclusion : The injectors in a Volvo do nead a copper washer !!!

No they don't......trhe injectors will sit high in the head...Injectors only need copper washers where they seat in a cast iron cylinder head. Volvo 2003 have a copper injector sleeve so the washer is not required.

If your injector leaked then this indicates that the sleeve seat is damaged slightly and the extra copper washer is deforming into the damaged area. Strictly speaking you need a new sleeve and try and ensure the injectors are always correctlu tightened and not allowed to blow as this cuts the copper seat.

there must be a misunderstanding : first we have a Volvo MD22L of 1995 and second we got the copper washer directly from Volvo service depot in Antwerp .

Seems there's some confusion creeping in here. The Volvo 2003 does not have a washer under the injector, it has copper sleeves which the injectors fit into. The Volvo MD22L which FlorealIII refers to does have a washer under the injector (because the cylinder head of that engine doesn't have copper sleeves fitted).

The thread is about a Volvo 2003 engine....See the title....This is not the same as a MD22L as you have.....It can be dangerous to assume one Volvo engine is the same as another as Volvo adapt engines from many sources...Also many injector specialists supply a copper washer as a matter of course assuming it is in a steel or cast iron pocket. This washer is not required in copper sleeves.

Yes you misunderstood the relevance of the heading 2003 which is a model number /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Unfortunately a poster not realising the relevance of 2003 and assuming all volvos are the same as his froggy car engine derived MD22L confused the issue....

The basic rule is that copper washers are only used in steel r cast iron injector pockets. If there is a copper sleeve then no copper washer is required.

The copper washers should be annealed for best operation and this is done by heating to red heat over a flame and dropping into cold water.

Although a washer can sometimes regain a seal on a leaking 2000 series engine or MD2B etc there is a danger of the injector sitting igh and the spray pattern hitting the end of the sleeve.

I also have a volvo md22l in my boat and feel a little under attack by bilgediver.

"his froggy car engine derived MD22L" as he states.
I'm afraid I don't grasp the full meaning of this sentence but it doesn't sound al to good to me. Is there a problem with this engine or so?

It is a re-badged Perkins m50 ( same as Austin Rover Montego diesel) Fairly bullet proof so don't panic

Nop......its a good engine which has done sterling service and proved itself....Just remember it likes copper washers .

The only problem I have seen is in the marinisation and concerns the heat exchangers but these can be problematic on any boat as they get older .

Sorry If you were losing sleep.. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Whereas Volvo used to use their own base engines they then like others took other makers engines and rebadged them ie the 2020 etc series.

Yep the 22 is the Prima.....I was thinking of the Peugot derivation which must be the 21 as was in the Westerly Vulcan etc. Both are good engines .
