Anybody know if the central tie-bolt in these heat exchangers is a single bar that can be removed from the tubestack by pulling through or are they bonded in?
Just sheared it unscrewing the end cap, seems well fixed in the central tube, perhaps it is not a single bar but two pieces screwed in?

Detailed , exploded parts diagrams at http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/default.aspx?

But you won't want to pay VP's price for a short length of bar threaded on the ends

No- Volspec price also ridiculous. If I can get it out I am sure I can get a cheaper replacement
The original seems very weak material - broke turning by hand, no tools involved - clean break no sign of old fissure

Had same problem last winter. It "sticks" a bit where it passes thru the tube stack, but will come out. I bought a length of 6mm? SS threaded rod & cut it to length.
Use SS nuts & flat washers on both ends. Suggest you make a modified retainer for the 2 FW pipes on the front end (item 30 p/n 840746) from aluminum. The modified retainer has 1/2 circle cutouts @ each end,to better surround & retain the 2 pipes.I found an article detailing this mod somewhere online, but can't recall where. Will try to find it. / Len

Len, I pushed it through today ok. I had a home made stainless steel retainer already for one pipe and agree a double version is advisable.
