Started getting intermittent faults: Rev counter ok on startup then after 1 or 2 seconds needle drops to zero. Checked for slipping alternator belt but that's fine. Secondly, oil alarm sounding on switch on. Goes off when started and not on on switch off but goes off again when power switched back on.
However, problems usually disappear after a short while. Could it be damp/condensation in the control panel. It seems to happen after rain or washing the boat. Could this be it?

Check the fuse bank on top of the engine. It's the funny looking transparant square with four connections of which only one is used (Above the altenator). The three other are spare fuses. Probably the connectors are corroded.

From experience it's probably the connector on the back of the control panel and 'may' be accompanyied by a slight whine frome the alarm which tens to indicate a poor common return (earth). Equally it could be at the engine/alternator end.

cheers

My diagnosis is dodgy contacts in the keyswitch. Try stripping the panel down and cleaning all the contacts. Then try contact cleaner in the switch followed by a lubricant like WD40.

If the problem persists try jiggling the switch slightly when the engine is running to make sure the contact is made properly.

All the above worked for me.
