Hi All,

I have a badly leaking fresh-water circulation pump on a volvo 2003 engine. There is a overhaul/repair kit available from Volvo for this pump at around £130.

However, my problem is that both Volspec and French Marine say that the results from using this repair kit are questionsable (by that I assume they mean it still leaks a bit). Instead they both recommend a complete new pump assembly which is £500+.

My question therefore: has anyone used this repair kit sucessfully and how hard is it to rebuild, specialist tools requied etc.

Thanks in advance,

Steve W.

suspect the reason they say it is questionable is because you have to use a press to put pumps like this back together. peeps dont have access to one so use a hammer which then shatters the ceramic seal!

Stu,

Thanks for the input.

I do have access to a press at a local machine shop, but surely so does Volspec/French Marine?

Both firms were unsure of the resuls even when I ask if they could do the job for me!

I've had the same problem last winter. The DIY kit is also not recommended in Holland, as special tools are required. Therefore I bought a replacement pump. Volvo actually sells refurbished ones as well, basically you buy one and hand in the old one. That still set me back 400 Euro's. But the pump is working 100%. I still feel this is outrageous given the fact that almost every car in the world has basically the same thing inside... Oh well.

Cheers,
Arno

hi steve , i have just repaired my leaking 2010 pump . after a tricky removal i found the only thing that needed replacing was the outer seal which can be removed with the pump in situ !, i ordered a new seal from a bearing supplier £5. 90 each . but it must have a stainless spring in it the one i used last time didnt and of course rusted away and allowed water to seep past. but the shaft ,bearing, spacers ,everything was perfect . engine hours around 1500 , i was horrified at volvos £452 for a new pump where do they get off ? i managed to buy a new one from e bay at a place in southampton called ajay trading ,brand new £60 ! ,there are alternatives to volvos extortionate pricing !(2 xengines ,cat ) to remove the outer seal without removing the pump i used 2 small 3.5 x 16 , self tapping screws with a screwgun , and drove them into the seal and pulled it out with 2 pairs of pliers ,i know its unconventional but it works .(i have done this 3 times over 10 years .)good luck
