Volvo 2002 starts ok, runs ok at 2000 plus revs under load.
Every time engine used over longish period engine will not idle in neutral.
It just dies. Starts again first time every time but just wont idle.
Have set idle speed to 900 rpm. Makes no difference.
It will idle when warmed up provided its not been under load for an extended period!
It isnt fuel bug, airlock or blocked filters. Have checked for those.
Anything else easily checked?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I had the same problem with our engine after a pretty rough channel crossing when I used the donk to help us get in more quickly. Came up to the pontoon and went into neutral before going astern, and she died!

Thought it was fuel filters as it had been rough, but not at all. Turned out to be a leather diaphragm in the fuel pump, that was supposed to maintain a vacuum and act on a valve. It had a hole in it, but after replacement all was good. It's a Bosch fuel pump and IIRC, the Volvo Penta diesel that we once had on a previous boat had a similar unit.

There's a dome at the aft end of the pump which had to be removed - the leather diaphragm and a large spring are inside. Have a look and see if the info matches.

Worth checking. Best of luck.
