Volvo 2002 water pump seals drip

I have tracked down the cause of bilge water to a drip from the water pump in the vp2002. when running and especially when just stopped there is a drip about every 3 seconds from the pump. It does not appear to be coming from the impeller cover but at the back of the pump. I suspect this means the seal is on its way out. from experience can anyone tell me:

1) does this just get progressively worse or is the prelude to a sudden large failure?

2) can the seals be accessed when changing an impeller or will the pump need stripping? If so how does the drive shaft engage with the drive from the engine?

3) wheres the best place to get the bits?

Once again thanks in advance for your useful and valued advice!

Re: Volvo 2002 water pump seals drip

The pump can be removed easily and the seals bought from RS components .the number is the size in MM ie 24127 where 24 is the o/s dia, 12 shaft dia ,7 the thickness (depth) of the seal. The seals will cost a LOT more from Volvo dealers.

Re: Volvo 2002 water pump seals drip

Further to Billjratt, hopefully it is just the lip seals.

I had the same as yourself but much worse. Unfortunately the spindle was too far gone and a more dramatic solution was required. The seals and two bearings were easily sourced but the spindle was only available from Volvo in the form of a kit.

In the end I bought the kit which was about £80 which included the spindle, bearings and seals. I had to press the bearings onto the shaft using a vice. This was about eight year's ago and perhaps things have changed since then. Perhaps you can now get an exchange pump.

Best of luck and hope it's just the seals.

It is something to investigate as a matter of urgency, as a small drip ignored will result in a b*gg*red shaft with consequent pain in the wallet.

It's possible a machine shop would turn you a new shaft or repair the old one for less than the kind souls at Volvo will charge you for new

Re: Volvo 2002 water pump seals drip

As others have suggested do it sooner rather than later. If it gets really bad it is possible for water to find its way through the oil seal into the engine.
It is not likely to suddenly fail but it could get worse quite quickly

Re: Volvo 2002 water pump seals drip

I had a similar leak last year and I had to replace the shaft as well. A kindly engineering firm allowed me to use their press which made the job much easier as the bearings are a very tight fit on the shaft.

I was told that if you can feel a groove with your nail the shaft should be replaced as it will cause premature wear of the seal.

The part numbers you need are as follows:

Volvo 2002 Water Pump Shaft - 840773
Volvo 2002 Water Pump Seal - 833996 (x2)

Here is a picture of my old shaft

Re: Volvo 2002 water pump seals drip

When this happened to my 2002 VP offered me a new pump at over £300. Not an option. The shaft is a fairly simople affair and I'm sure a local machine shop should be able to make up a new one for a reasonable price. Make sure they make it from 316 stainless or better. When fitting new bearings to the shaft, warm them up in a bath of oil to around 60 - 80 deg C (no more than 80) and they should just drop onto the shaft with little effort. Once they have cooled the assembly should be a light push fit into the pump body. As Vic mentioned the seal should be replaced asap to prevent water finding its way into the engine. If this is not possible, ensure the weep hole through which the water is dripping is kept clear so that the water can escape to bilge.

Re: Volvo 2002 water pump seals drip

I've just done the same job, didnt replace the shaft though. Got all the seals from keypart.co.uk. Just ask for their sea water pump gasket & seal kit and o-ring for the 2002. cost in the order of 15 quid.

Its not hard to service it yourself, but you will need the exploded diagram of the pump mentioned above and also some spring clip calipers.

My bilge is dry for the first time in ages!!

Re: Volvo 2002 water pump seals drip

thanks for the tips.. seals on order.. do the suction / delivery pipes detach from the pump body? how do they seal and should they have the seals replaced?

I dream of dry bilges!

Re: Volvo 2002 water pump seals drip

They just pull off, mine were quite stiff though. You should find there are two fat rubber bands in the kit that dont seem to go anywhere else. pop these over the pipes, fish the old ones out of the sockets and reassemble. I replaced mine simply because:
1. new ones came in the kit
2. the old ones had gone green
3. there was evidence of leakage

if yours arent leaking then I guess its not critical they are changed but then I don't see any reason not to either.
